JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

This position is established on a Forest Service Unit. The position serves as a skilled member of a fuels management crew.

This is a continuously open vacancy announcement for one or more locations throughout the Forest Service. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.

TEMPORARY OPEN CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT: Most positions are expected to start in April and be filled through September. There may be some positions that start earlier and/or end later. Applicants are encouraged to apply early in the recruitment process. The first certificate of candidates will be issued to the hiring unit no sooner than five working days after the opening date of the announcement. Additional certificates will be issued upon request from the hiring unit. When there are no applicants for specific locations, the search area may be broadened when generating certificates to include locations in the closest city nearby. Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).

Positions may be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year which can be extended 1 additional year.

Collect and compiles resource data for long and medium range planning, treatment and reporting of natural and created fuel hazard management program. Executes fuel treatment plans, slash hazard appraisals, and hazard reduction plans for slash creating projects or contracts. Records fuel treatment activity records for required reports and final project completion. Works with timber sales and the Contracting Officers Representative on thinning contracts in laying out fuel breaks, fuel reduction corridors, piling areas and other fuel treatments. Conduct pre-attack plans, providing input used in setting annual priorities for fuel treatment projects according to budget and weather constraints. Maintains fuel management inventories as they are completed and updates the files as conditions change. Coordinates fuel treatment plans and activities with other functions to ensure efficient use of workforce resources to accomplish program objectives. Carries out prescribed burning plans for less complex projects and fuel types, supervising burning projects according to qualifications.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4. Specialized Experience is defined as one or more of the following: Suppressing the full range of difficulty and complexity of fires; Serving as an advanced trainee performing specific, fire suppression and/or fuels management duties, such as extinguished burning materials by moving dirt, or applying water by hose or retardant; Performing standard fuels management duties involving on-site judgment of fire conditions and selection of appropriate work techniques. –OR

Successful completion of a four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelors' degree or the equivalent. Education must include at least 24 semester/36 quarter hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management with natural resources emphasis, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester/9 quarter hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR

Selective Placement Factors:

  • A minimum 90 days experience performing wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practices under various conditions. This experience must be documented with specific dates in the online application or resume.

WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the MODERATE level is a "condition of employment." The Moderate fitness (Field) test requires completing a two (2) mile hike within thirty (30) minutes, while carrying a twenty-five (25) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.
