For GS-9 position:1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level OR successful completion of a full 2-years of graduate education in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include performing forestry technician work; engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on nonforest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment; farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided an understanding of land use; or forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work.:
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS:In addition to the qualification requirements above, candidates must possess the following certification and training in order to be considered eligible for this position. In order to receive credit, candidates must provide documentation verifying that they meet the required National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) qualifications for this IFPM position by the closing date of this announcement.
- Primary core qualification: Task Force Leader (TFLD); AND Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4); AND Firing Boss, Single Resources (FIRB)

Selectees for IFPM positions requiring currency will be required to obtain and maintain currency for the NWCG qualifications listed above.
SELECTIVE FACTOR: All candidates selected for this position must also meet or exceed a selective factor which requires a minimum of 90-days of wildland firefighting experience. The selective factor cannot be waived. Wildland fires are categorized into two distinct types: 1) Wildfires, Unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires. 2) Prescribed Fires, Planned ignitions. This description includes only fireline experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience.
SECONDARY FIREFIGHTER POSITION: This is designated as a Secondary-Administrative firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) (FERS). Firefighter retirement coverage of the incumbent depends upon his or her individual work history. PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet position qualification requirements, but not meet special retirement coverage eligibility. If such an applicant is selected, she/he will be placed in the regular retirement code. IN ADDITION: For positions covered under 6(c) as Secondary-Administrative, management has certified that a "MANDATORY PREREQUISITE EXISTS prior experience as a Primary firefighter, or equivalent experience outside the Federal Government.
SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicants successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
OTHER: Incumbent is required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid drivers license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighting over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is primarily performed in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material.
TELEWORK INDICATOR: The Bureau of Indian Affairs has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

- KNOWLEDGE OF POLICIES, PROCEDURES, REGULATIONS, AND GUIDELINES PERTAINING TO BUDGETING, PROCUREMENT,PROPERTY/FLEET MANAGEMENT, TIMEKEEPING, AND OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITIES.
- KNOWLEDGE OF SUPERVISORY POLICIES, PROCEDURES AND METHODS IN ORDER TO MANAGE A DIVERSE WORKFORCE.
