This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Division of Mining Research Operations (DMRO), Dust, Ventilation and Toxic Substances Branch (DVTSB), Bruceton, Pennsylvania.

The incumbent will conduct research in the areas of diesel engine emission measurement and analysis to reduce exposure to those byproducts of combustion.  Responsible for the scientific analysis and technical support for the selection and evaluation of emissions control technologies aimed at curtailing diesel emissions.  Coordinates projects and serves as an advisor to scientists/engineers and offices in program offices both internally and externally in the area of aerosol generation and measurement.  Communicates with other NIOSH groups and government agencies, contractors, and/or private institutions on topics related to diesel emission research.  Coordinates research with other NIOSH groups and government agencies through informal meetings, attending workshops and symposia.  Serves as a senior scientist in planning, directing, and coordinating projects intended to ultimately establish new approaches or methods related to the sampling and quantifying of emissions generated by diesel powered vehicles.  Publishes reports of research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, contributes to NIOSH technical documents, presents papers at scientific conferences, and represents the Laboratory or Institute to other Federal agencies, professional societies, state governments and private entities.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have successfully completed a full (4) four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

 

OR

 

Possess a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to one of the majors listed above, and I have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

 

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

 

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include conducting research in the area of diesel emission monitoring and control.
