If selected, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for administering a program to inform and educate a state-wide or region-wide audience consisting of various racial, ethnic, economic, and social groups, bar associations, community organizations, and law enforcement organizations and agencies. Typical work assignments include:

  • Executing state-wide or region-wide efforts to convey complex information concerning an organizations initiatives, programs, and operations;
  • Planning a comprehensive public affairs effort to inform the public and enhance understanding of an organization’s initiatives;
  • Responding to routine information requests from local and regional news media on significant program initiatives.
  • Arranging special events, workshops, seminars, community outreach events and other meetings with various organizations;
  • Maintaining direct contact with the general public, specialized groups, and community and governmental entities directly affect by an organization’s programs; and
  • Developing press releases.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with print and broadcast media representatives;
  • Preparing magazine and newspaper articles, brochures, news releases, booklets, etc., for publication and dissemination;
  • Assisting personnel in other agencies and Departmental components on carrying out community relations activities.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Travel Required: Intermittent.

GS 9: To be eligible at the GS 9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped you with the competencies needed to perform the job duties. Examples of specialized experience are: having direct experience in media relations or news reporting; gathering facts and drafting press releases or news stories for publication; editing written press releases, news stories or reports; assisting in statewide or regional efforts to convey complex information concerning an organization’s initiatives, programs, and operations.

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field: Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS 11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience.

: One of the following types of education in a related field: PhD or equivalent doctoral degree; OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Combining Education and Experience:
Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years.

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS 12 level, you must meet one full year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level.

Specialized Experience is defined as performing the following types of duties: developing and conducting a public affairs program in a law office; developing news releases, fact sheets, talking points, and related materials for publication in printed media; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with print and broadcast media; and conducting workshops, seminars, and other meetings with various audiences.
