This position is located in the Torpedo Test Equipment Department of Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport, RI. The individual is responsible for the acquisition and sustainment of torpedo test equipment. He/she will collaborate with other branch members and assigned project leads regarding technical content of Engineering Change Proposals (ECP) and system trouble reports (STR) for the design, fabrication, fielding and sustainment of torpedo test equipment

  • The candidate requires extensive knowledge of Lightweight Torpedo (LWT) MK 46 and MK 45 and associated support and test equipment (S&TE), Heavyweight Torpedo (HWT) Fleet Exercise Section (FES), and Heavyweight Torpedo data recorder communication protocols and test implementation.
  • The candidate is required to design torpedo test equipment architectures that facilitate configuration management of multiple baselines and modularization of software to maximize Test Program Set (TPS) interchangeability.
  • The candidate demonstrates an ability to apply these concepts in the modernization of existing HWT and LWT test systems as well as the development of new Heavyweight Torpedo and Lightweight Torpedo Test Program Sets.

THIS POSITION HAS A POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR ENGINEERS. Applicants must meet the BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS in order to be found minimally qualified for the position. You MUST furnish a copy of your transcript(s) of college work completed, regardless if you are currently in this series and proof of degree with your application. Failure to provide transcript(s) with your application will result in your application being rated not qualified. The Basic Requirement for this position is

[A] a degree in professional engineering. Curriculum must (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics;

OR

[B] combination of education and experience - college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by ONE of the following: professional registration; written test (successfully passed the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) examination or the written test required for professional registration); specified academic courses (successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering); OR related curriculum (successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field).

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR COMPUTER SCIENTIST 1550

Possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one or more years of progressively related experience. Specialized experience is

1) forecasting equipment, facilities, and manpower required to support future requirements of torpedo systems;

2) communicating with all levels of an organization to provide advice on torpedo systems integration and testing;

3) developing system architectures to improve testing methodologies and support Open System Architecture tenants.

DEFENSE ACQUISITION WORKFORCE IMPROVEMENT ACT (DAWIA)

This position is covered under the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) and requires additional education, training and experience. Applicants should meet the DAWIA Certification requirements for the Systems Planning, Research, Development and Engineering Career Field and be certified at Level III at the time of application.
