Desired candidates will meet both the educational and experience eligiblity requirements for the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) and the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Examination.
You must have one year Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private/military sector) giving the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position. Experience must be reflected in your resume.
Specialized experience required for this position is:
Knowledge sufficient to develop/implement regulatory interpretation of published occupational health standards associated with explosive, chemical, biological, and radiological hazards;
Expert knowledge of project management principles, practices, tools, and techniques sufficient to conduct studies to evaluate existing work methods, tools, equipment, and resource utilization, as well as present findings/recommendations to management;
Mastery level knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices as it relates to the work of an Industrial Hygienist.
Specifically you will be evaluated on the following competencies:
1. Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and procedures. (This includes the development and execution of qualitative and quantitative workplace exposure assessments, local exhaust and general ventilation assessments, explosive and radiation safety program assessment, mastery of use of both basic and advanced industrial hygiene equipment, and the development of advanced training presentations to support the industrial hygiene program.)
2. Skill in industrial hygiene field work. (This includes Knowledge of published occupational health standards associated with various hazards.)
3. Ability to perform industrial hygiene consultative services. (This includes Knowledge of contracting and procurement procedures including safety and health plan review for potential contractors.)
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
This position has a Basic Requirement for the 0690 series:
A. Degree: industrial hygiene; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Education: All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university.
Evaluation of Experience: Qualifying experience may have been obtained in field, laboratory, engineering, or other environment if the work provided a means of obtaining a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls. Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment.
Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience in the same of similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-11) in federal service requiring the application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume experience that includes the identification and evaluation of adverse conditions in the workplace; performing industrial hygiene investigations or surveys; preparing reports of survey findings to make recommendations of eliminating hazardous working conditions; reviewing and implementing an industrial hygiene program; and the ability to oversee industrial hygiene personnel.
