JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Design/Editing Unit, Office of Exhibits Central,(OEC) Smithsonian Institution. The employee provides comprehensive construction documents and graphic files as a bridge between Design and Production.

  • Details all plans pertaining to project design and specifications using such programs as Inventor, Autocad and Vectorworks to ensure design is in line with bid and buildability constraints.
  • Serves as a liaison between production and design to insure that specific fabrication and graphic details effectively reflect the design intent.
  • Provides graphic support using such programs as the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator).
  • Collaborates with Project Manager to establish early estimates, detailed schedules, and budgets to produce and install the exhibit.

Experience: One year of full-time experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade that is close or similar to the work of this job. The experience includes determining how to build exhibits and related components based on industry standards and codes and articulating in computer-generated drawings; and preparing computer-generated production and graphic files or use in the production of museum exhibits using such equipment as CNC routers, mills, and graphic plotters.

 Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements. Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying. Special Instructions for Foreign Education: If you are qualifying by education and/or you have education completed in a foreign college/university described above, it is your responsibility to provide transcripts and/or proof of U.S. accreditation for foreign study. HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Ability to create production-ready files and documents for exhibit fabrication and installation.
  2. Ability to contribute and communicate with all stake holders details and methods for building exhibit components.
  3. Skill with computer aided graphics software, such as Adobe Creative Suite software, i.e., Photoshop, Illustrator, in Design, Bridge and Acrobat, as well as visual design.
  4. Ability to manage time and resources to complete projects on schedule and within budget.
