This position is located at Harlingen, Texas with the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System, Pathology and Laboratory Service.

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Managing the operations of the Surgical Pathology and Autopsy services.
  • Integrating and educating residents.
  • Performing all elements of gross examination and sectioning of all types of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Performing or requesting specialized tests including histochemical and immunohistochemical stains and cytometry, and interpreting the results.
  • Evaluating and implementing new equipment and ordering supplies.
  • Embedding, cutting, staining and labeling of routine histology as needed.
  • Photographing gross specimens and maintaining a teaching collection of gross photographs.
  • Investigating and resolving problems related to Surgical Pathology.
  • Reviewing regulatory criteria, insuring all procedures and protocols are maintained up-to-date.
  • Preparing work areas for inspections and participating in the inspection processes.
  • Educating and training residents and medical students, regarding the practice of Surgical Pathology and Autopsy.
  • Training new employees and other health care workers about Anatomic Pathology.
  • Supervising the work unit and all activities.
  • Advising and providing counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures and directives of management.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:  Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm; Alternate work schedules may be required.

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic education requirement of possessing a bachelor's degree (or higher) with a major study in an academic field related to the position. TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED (If you do not supply a copy of your transcript, your application package may not be processed.)

AND

In addition to meeting the above basic requirement, you must also possess one (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: managing surgical pathology and autopsy services; processing tissue specimens (surgical and autopsy) using various processes and instruments.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position (Narrative Responses Not Required):

  • Skill in histopathology principles, concepts and methodology.
  • Ability to interpret specialized tests and laboratory findings.
  • Ability to use, maintain and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, quality control procedures and clinical laboratory operations requirements.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with people from a variety of backgrounds and levels of education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work requires long periods of standing while performing gross examinations and teaching others to do so, recurring bending over when performing frozen sections and autopsies, occasional lifting of heavy items (bodies), and above average dexterity in dissecting specimens and cutting frozen sections. The work involves regular and recurring exposures to irritating and volatile organic solutions and potentially infectious materials. Protective gear and special safety precautions are required, such as a laboratory coat, gloves, mask, and eye protective devices as necessary.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

  • Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
  • Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
  • Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
  • Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
