As a Sales Store Clerk, typical work assignments include: 

  • Selling of merchandise at the museum sales store desk, collecting admissions fees for museum exhibit areas, and performing a variety of clerical duties in support of these activities.
  • Receiving payment for sales of merchandise and admission fees. Recording sales on a cash register, making change, preparing sales slips, and distributing admission tickets if they are required.
  • Answering inquiries about merchandise and prices and furnishing general information about the exhibits and library and museum operations. Answering incoming telephone calls, providing routine information, referring callers to other staff members, and recording messages.
  • Closing out cash registers and counting receipts. Comparing the total of cash, checks and charges with the totals shown on the cash registers or register tapes. Locating and correcting errors by recount and review of any adjustments that have been made and reconciling the balances.
  • Preparing daily report forms, and assisting in maintaining daily ledger accounts of receipts, and preparing deposit forms for receipts and transmittal forms for transfer of receipts to the bank.
  • Conducting daily inventory of stock on hand at the sales store desk, preparing a list of items needed for the next day, restocking sales store desk before opening, and informing supervisor of any items that need to be reordered.
  • Maintaining an accurate daily accounting of museum visitors and assuring that the information is properly dated and categorized by paid or free admission, guided or non-guided tour, public programs admission, or school group admission.
  • Planning for and setting up merchandise displays, revising price lists, arranging merchandise in storerooms, and packaging sales items for mailing from written inquiries.

GS-03 - Candidates must have at least six months of general experience that demonstrates responsible clerical, office or other work.


Education may be substituted for experience.  GS-3: One year of education above the high school level.


Combination of Experience and Education: You may also combine post-high school education and experience to meet the total experience requirements for the GS-3 level.


Physical Requirements: Work is performed while standing with occasional sitting, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying light to medium weight materials.
