This position is located in the Division of Maintenance for George Washington Memorial Parkway, in Arlington, VA.

 

The George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) preserves the natural scenery along the Potomac River. It connects the historic sites from Mount Vernon, where Washington lived, past the nation's capital, which he founded, and to the Great Falls of the Potomac where the President demonstrated his skill as an engineer. Developed as a memorial to George Washington, the Parkway may be used on any day to travel to exciting historical, natural, and recreational areas. 

 

The purpose of this position is to operate one or more motorized vehicles, which typically have a gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds to 32,000 pounds. 

 

Moderate physical effort is needed by this position in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavy loads or a large number of people.  Considerable effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs.

 

Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures.  Operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

Operates one or more motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, specialty pumping equipment, trash removal trucks, rubber-tired back hoes, front-end loaders, trucks equipped with up to 8 1/2 foot wide snow plows, and vibratory rollers over public and park roads at up to highway speeds to transport passengers, supplies, materials, or equipment and tools, to tow equipment throughout rural or urban areas, to plow snow, and for road and trail maintenance and repair.  Operates vehicles over rough terrain, in close quarters, and in heavy traffic.  Operates compressed-air jack hammers and tampers, air compressors, shovels, rakes, and hand tampers, to perform road maintenance and repairs. Digs ditches, levels grades and fill holes in road repair projects. Performs simple electric-arc and oxy-acetylene welding and cutting to repair or modify trucks and equipment.  Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles, tools and equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Appointment will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation. Under the requirements of the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), all new Federal Employees must pass a background investigation. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

 

New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty.

 

NPS uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.

 

Applicants must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license or District of Columbia driver's license.

 

This is a drug tested position.

 

Applicant must be able to work alternative work schedules, shift rotations, including night shift, holidays, and weekends.

 

Incumbent will be required to work outdoors, often under adverse conditions.
