Thisposition is located at the Redding, CA. Community Based Outpatient Clinic(CBOC) under the VA Northern California Healthcare System.

The majorduties and responsibilities include:

  • Process,assemble, trouble-shoot, prepare, sterilize, store, and issue sterile andunsterile medical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Know thetechnical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operatingconditions of medical instrumentation items.
  • Decontaminate,clean, prepare, sterilize, and store medical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Useaseptic techniques.
  • Operate awasher-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steamsterilizers.

WORK SCHEDULE: MONDAY – FRIDAY 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Thisposition involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed belowrepresent the full performance level of GS-6. At the GS-5 grade level, you willperform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. Youwill progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the fullperformance level of GS-6. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor andis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work,and availability of funds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR GS-5:

You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilitiesto perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience musthave been equivalent to the next lowergrade level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience mayinclude but are not limited to: in-processing,assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuingsterile and unsterile medical instrumentation and equipment. You must befamiliar with the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, andoperating conditions of medical instrumentation items; knowledge ofdecontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures;be familiar with aseptic techniques; and knowledge in operating awasher-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steamsterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as anoperating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant,corpsman, or laboratory worker, etc.

Successfully complete at least 4 years of educationabove high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study in any field.(TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

  1. Knowledgeof sterilizing and cleaning medical instruments and equipment.
  2. Knowledgeof decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization and storageprocedures.
  3. Abilityto communicate both orally and in writing with staff members of varyingbackgrounds.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

You willstand and move from one room while performing your duties. There will befrequent lifting, tote bins or baskets of instruments weighing 25 lbs. from thefloor to chest level. Must be able to lift, open and move instrumentationsometimes weighing 30 lbs. or more while taking clean and sterileinstrumentation out of cartons to put in storage areas. Other physical demandsrequire good eyesight, specific agility, dexterity, climbing, pushing carts(weighing several hundred lbs.) through hallways and over slight rises indoorways and elevators, stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching using properbody mechanics.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

  • Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
  • Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
  • Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
  • Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
