This position is located in Region 6, on the Colville National Forest, Supervisors office located in Colville, Washington. The position is part of a team that provides engineering services and support to the management of the forest’s transportation infrastructure. This position works directly for the Forest Transportation Manager, helping provide expertise in road management and maintenance, preparation and administration of construction and maintenance contracts.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above, or that included any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics.

CERTIFICATION: Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician’s quality experience.


Specialized experience directly related to this position. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Qualifying experience for the GS-08 level includes at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level performing work related to the duties of this position. Examples of work experience includes: developed design specifications for structures to meet specific requirements, and devised means to overcome problems such as weight and space limitations. inspected small construction sites, road projects, building structures; assisting in design and layout of roads, and bridges; extracting and applying engineering technical guidelines; observed work site and activities for safety practices. Performed structural stress and strength tests and made minor adaptations to standard tests.

Qualifying experience for the GS-09 level includes at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level performing work related to the duties of this position. Examples of work experience includes: attended pre-bid and bid opening conferences to discuss construction features and requirements in terms of methods and equipment. Conducted detail site surveys, such as plotting and setting stakes to mark pertinent features; developing and submitting project designs for construction sites, road projects and buildings; checking requirements on contract designs, maintaining records an monitoring construction projects for roads, trails, and bridges. Preparing plans, specifications and cost estimates for modifications.
