JOB SUMMARY:

The Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) coordinates the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) research programs and is charged with advancing the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve our Nation's transportation system.

This is an entry-level Pathway Internship position with the US Department of Transportation.

You will serve as a Student Trainee for the Office of Chief Counsel for RITA.  The Trainee will work on intellectual property issues throughout USDOT and issues arising in RITA's research programs.

The ideal candidate is an innovative thinker who can communicate legal and policy analysis both verbally and in writing. The candidate must be able to work under deadlines, give meticulous attention to detail and be proactive in ambiguous situations.  Finally, the candidate must be able to provide customer service dealing with clients and customers and be cooperative and collaborative in working with colleagues.

This is an Excepted Service appointment.  As part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee’s educational program requirements have been completed.  You may be converted, without a break in service, to a term (time-limited), career, or career-conditional (permanent) appointment upon graduation and completion of program requirements but there is no guarantee.  The selectee is on a trial period while on the Pathways Internship appointment.

(Pathway) Legal Occupations Student Trainee :

 

  • Prepare guidance for USDOT on routine copyright and trademark issues, including advice on when to contact the legal office.
  • Develop forms for requesting permission to use copyright material.
  • Provide intake for routine copyright and trademark issues and recommend action to counsel.
  • Analyze novel legal issues and prepare legal memoranda.
  • Support IP-related strategy with legal and policy analysis.

Qualifying Education:  Current student with at least two full years of Progressively higher level graduate education leading to a LLM or JD or related or a current student with a Master degree. (Must submit a transcript or verification of completion to support your student status.)


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.  Interns will work full-time during the summer and may work a flexible part-time work schedule during the school year (based on agency needs) while continuing their education. 

You will be in a trial period throughout your entire Pathways Internship appointment.  If selected by management, you are required to complete a Declaration for Federal Employment (OF-306) to determine your suitability for federal employment and to authorize a background investigation.
