Specialized Experience: ONE (1) YEAR of specialized experience that equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must be equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aide performing duties such as:
· Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
· Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
· Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
· Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients. OR
Education: Have successfully completed a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation in an accredited community college, junior college, or college/university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of this position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician. Combined Education and Experience: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-5. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position. Physical Demands: Duties involve physical exertion on a regular and recurring basis. The work consist of lifting and positioning of patients in varying degrees of immobility; standing and walking for prolonged periods. Considerable agility and dexterity is required to porivde care in proper and safe manner and incumbent must be able to do recurring bending, stooping, reaching and similar activities.
