You will be assigned as Nursing Assistant at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Nursing Service located at Kerrville, Texas. As a Nursing Assistant, you will perform a variety of personal care, nursing care, and rehabilitation activities.  You will perform a wide variety of duties directed toward implementing an individualized rehabilitation treatment plan for patients.  You will transport patients via wheel chair or gurney, and/or accompanies ambulatory patients who need assistance to various areas within he hospital including clinics, diagnostic areas, and treatment areas. You may accompany patient to off station facilities for special testing and for procedures. You will perform simple personal care duties such as bathing or feeding patients. Provide oral care, nail, hair and related hygiene care. You will assist patients with toileting needs, providing incontinent care. You will perform basic nursing care that requires knowledge of standardized procedures such as performance of active/passive range-of-motion activities, insuring that catheters and oxygen camula are maintained intact, etc. You will identify physical, social, psychological and cultural needs of patients by applying relevant growth and development processes specific to the age of the patient. You will be responsible for performing feeding and hygiene care as well as the care of patients' non-routine care and comfort needs for psycho/social/spiritual well being.  You will identify and report data relative to more complex patient situations including subtle changes in patient's behavior or condition, or variances related to neurological signs, vital signs, and other parameters. You will perform documentation in support of the care and treatment given to patients such as receiving patients, maintaining patient records by recording activities. You will perform technical work involving the treatment, instruction and working with veterans using equipment in carrying out the therapeutic activities prescribed for their physical and mental rehabilitation.  You will assist with a course of progressive physical therapy treatment based on the needs of the patient.

BASIC REQUIREMENT

 

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.

 

Specialized Experience: ONE (1) YEAR of specialized experience that equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.   To be creditable, this experience must be equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in Federal service.   Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aide performing duties such as:

 

· Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.

· Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.

· Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.

· Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.  OR

 

Education:  Have successfully completed a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation in an accredited community college, junior college, or college/university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of this position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.  (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR

 

Combined Education and Experience:  Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level.  To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned).  Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess.  Add the two percentages.  The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-5. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.   (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

Physical Demands:  Duties involve physical exertion on a regular and recurring basis.  The work consist of lifting and positioning of patients in varying degrees of immobility; standing and walking for prolonged periods.  Considerable agility and dexterity is required to porivde care in proper and safe manner and incumbent must be able to do recurring bending, stooping, reaching and similar activities.
