Join the management team at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, Maryland.  The NLM is the nation's primary resource for biomedical information in all formats and is the world's largest biomedical research library.

 

We're looking for a librarian with experience in public services, especially in resource sharing, to manage our busy Interlibrary Loan Unit within the Collection Access Section.  The Collection Access Section is responsible for interpreting and implementing the Library's interlibrary loan policy, identifying and retrieving collection items needed for onsite and offsite purposes, and maintaining a national and international document delivery request system.  The successful candidate will oversee the annual fulfillment of almost 250,000 loans per year to medical libraries.  The Library serves as the final resource for the nation in providing interlibrary loan service within the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

As the Head Librarian of the Interlibrary Loan Unit, some of your duties will include:

  • developing policies, programs, or products for an automated library system;
  • performing in-depth searches of multiple online information resources;
  • writing memoranda and reports related to library operations;
  • planning and delegating work assignments.

Basic Requirements:

You must meet the requirements for professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and education.  More specifically, you must meet the requirements specified in paragraphs A or B below: 

A.  Completion of at least 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree in any field;

OR

B.  A total of at least 5 years of combined of college-level education, training, and experience.  To qualify on this basis, you must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government.   Examples of qualifying experience include:  initiating and carrying out a variety of assignments related to locating, cataloging, classifying, selecting, controlling or preserving information and accessing particularly critical or obscure information through standard and automated systems; collecting and organizing data including charts, graphs, statistical reports. descriptions of work flow, analysis of database records, electronic files and processing procedures; applying standard practices of other disciplines as they relate to the librarian profession (e.g., physical and biological sciences, social sciences and humanities, languages, engineering, law, medicine, archival work curatorial work, contracting, computer systems analysis); modifying standard library practices, precedents, and techniques; evaluating, selecting, and adapting precedents to meet specialized information requirements; locating information, often of a specialized or technical nature, from a wide variety of published and unpublished sources and electronic data bases; providing various of library services that require searching beyond readily accessible sources of information and diversions from standard practices and approaches; and leading special projects or assignments that require a strong understanding of library systems technology, databases, and software as well as operating policies and procedures.
