NOTE:  The full performance level of this vacancy is 13.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-13.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience, and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Recruitment Incentive: Recruitment incentive of up to $5,000 for a 2 year commitment has been authorized.

DUTIES:

  • Manages activities of assigned clinical pharmacy staff.
  • Develops, implements, manages, and directs clinical pharmacy and educational programs.
  • Provides leadership to clinical pharmacy programs and services throughout VA Health Care System or Medical Center.
  • Assumes role of Acting Chief of Pharmacy Service, with associated duties/responsibilities if requested by Chief of Pharmacy, Chief of Staff, or Medical Center Director.
  • May be asked for a temporary detail assignment to other VA Health Care System or Medical Center for a period not exceeding 90 days, if mutually agreeable.
  • Establishes/compiles performance improvement indicators by monitoring clinical pharmacy programs and pertinent medication management systems.
  • Responsible for management of clinical practice including scheduling, reviewing consults (including non-formulary requests), providing patient care, and assuring coverage for clinical services at all times.
  • Responsible for the quality of education and experiences for PharmD student and/or residents.
  • Serves as program director, sponsor, and/or preceptor by coordinating/supervising activities of senior PharmD students and residents.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Graduate of Accreditation for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
  • Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e.. Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
  • Proficient in spoken and written the English language.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:  

Clinical pharmacy specialist functions at the highest level of clinical practice, works independently under their scope of practice as defined by the individual Medical Center to directly care for patients.

Plays a defined role in budgetary execution and serves as a mid-level provider who functions to initiate, modify or discontinue medication therapy and as a consultant for intensive medication therapy management services.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: 

  • Must have one (1) year experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.

Must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

1.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.

2.  Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards for their programs area.

3.  Ability to solve problems, coordinate, organize responsibilities to maximize outcomes in their program area or area of clinical expertise.

4.  Expert knowledge of a specialized area of clinical pharmacy practice or specialty area of pharmacy.

5.  Advanced skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters.
