If you have experience with short-order and/or large quantity cooking and serving of food AND you want to play a significant role in a dynamic organization, then consider joining the Nutrition Department. The Nutrition Department is committed to providing excellent service. Clinical Center patients are offered meals and nourishment to meet specific nutritional and research needs. Service includes meals to inpatient units, day hospitals and outpatient clinics.

 

You will prepare foods to fulfill requirements for special research and regular diets in the Metabolic Kitchen and Food Service Section.  

 

This position is located in Clinical Center.

If you are selected for this position, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

 

•  Serve as a mid-level cook in the Metabolic Kitchen and Food Service Section preparing food to fulfill requirements for regular and special diets; preparing and cooking a full range of foods; roasting, broiling, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, and stewing meats, fish, and poultry as well as slicing meat; ordering, issuing and food storage in accordance with inventory and sanitation requirements.
•  Operate specialized equipment to cook food in large quantities and rapidly chill and store the prepared items under refrigeration while following special health and safety procedures.
•  Take daily inventory of items stored in the production unit and communicate any needs to supervisor of items needed for food production.
•  Maintain clean sanitary and orderly work area; complete washing and related tasks.
•  Perform any other food service related duties such as weighing and measuring food items, checking trays, serving on the tray line, delivering and picking up trays, preparing special feeding and trays for research protocols, breaking down tray-line by removing unused food to an appropriate storage or discarding, and delivering soiled pans and utensils to pot washing area.

A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection/ placement.

 

A newly appointed or reappointed employee may receive service credit for prior work experience or active duty uniformed service that otherwise would not be creditable for the purpose of determining his or her annual leave accrual rate. This position is designated as an 'emergency' position and the selected candidate will be considered an 'emergency' employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances, e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapse in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.

 

This position requires work on weekends and holidays.
