The Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts broad programs of economic and other social science research and analysis relating to agriculture, food, natural resources and rural America for use by public and private decision makers. ERS' clients are the executive and legislative branches; environmental, consumer and public interest groups, including farm and industry groups; and the general public.
The Resource and Rural Economics Division (RRED) provides high quality, relevant, and objective information and economic analysis on interactions among natural resources, environmental quality, and agricultural and non-agricultural activities in rural communities. RRED monitors and analyzes the multiple links between the rural economy--agriculture and nonagricultural sectors--and natural resources and environmental quality.
The Farm and Rural Business Branch (FRB) develops, interprets and disseminates current analyses and longer term perspectives on the financial structure, performance, and viability of farms, the farm sector, and rural areas.

1. Degree: A bachelors (or higher) degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above:
GS-09: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service or two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree in economics or related discipline. For this position, specialized experience includes the following: 1) experience implementing an economic research study relevant to agriculture; 2) knowledge of advance (graduate level) microeconomic and quantitative analysis; and 3) skill in communicating economic concepts and research results.
GS-11: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service or three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in economics or related discipline. For this position, specialized experience includes the following: 1) experience independently planning, conceptualizing, and implementing an economic research study relevant to agriculture; 2) knowledge of advance (graduate level) microeconomic and quantitative analysis; and 3) skill in communicating economic concepts and research results.
Combining Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education and experience may be used to meet experience requirements.
