JOB SUMMARY:

Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

These are Full-time, Term positions. The incumbent will be expected to work for 13 months with a possible extension up to 4 years without further competition.

Who May Apply: All U.S. Citizens AND those eligible for consideration under a noncompetitive hiring authority (i.e., 30% or More Disabled Veteran, VRA, Schedule A, Interchange Agreement, etc.).

A position will be filled at the Grand Forks Field Office at the GS-07 or GS-08 grade level with full promotion potential to the GS-08 grade level. The work will require knowledge of systems, instrumentation, and control technologies such as those used in air handling systems, mass flow controls, and gas analyzers.

A position will also be filled at the Manhattan, KS field office at the GS-08 grade level and is at the full promotion potential. The work will require knowledge of instrumentation used in wind erosion and air quality research such as wind tunnels, wind measurements systems using pitot tubes and pressure transducers, and fine particulate and sediment sampling equipment. No travel is required.

Grand Forks Duties:

  • Provides input into the initial planning of experiments
  • Develops or designs various aspects of projects
  • Constructs, installs, and operates a variety of complex scientific equipment and instruments
  • Provides advisory services to scientists and research support staff on the use and capabilities of biomedical and scientific equipment
  • Provides occasional consult to facilities support personnel for building infrastructure such as ethernet, HVAC control, and closed circuit video and recording
  • Keeps records of experimental data
  • Tabulates, and analyzes data using software and personal computers

Manhattan Duties:

    • Provides input into the initial planning of experiments
    • Develops or designs various aspects of projects
    • Constructs, installs, and operates a variety of complex scientific equipment and instruments
    • Provides advisory services to scientists and research support staff on the use and capabilities of agricultural and scientific equipment
    • Keeps records of experimental data and evaluates for and corrects deficiencies
    • Tabulates, and analyzes data using appropriate software using personal computers

Minimum Qulifications at the GS-07 Level:

Specialized Experience: At least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to:

  • assisting with the construction and installation of experimental or other equipment used in the conduct of research assignments;
  • assembling and tabulating, collected data; and
  • preparing charts, graphs, figures, and reports illustrating and summarizing research results.

Education: Successful completion of one full year of graduate education with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, industrial technology, or other closely related field. Note: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

OR

Combination: Applicants may qualify based on an appropriate combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience. To determine your combination, first compute your experience as a percentage of the experience listed above; then determine your education as a percentage of the education listed above; then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

  • preparing charts, graphs, figures, and reports illustrating and summarizing research results using appropriate computer software packages for data collection, analysis, and presentation;
  • setting up and calibrating complex precision laboratory equipment; and
  • providing advisory services to scientists and research support staff on the use and capabilities of complex scientific equipment.

OR

    Education: Successful completion of one and a half years of graduate education in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, industrial technology, or other closely related field. Note: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this vacancy announcement.

This position is open to all US Citizens and Nationals, and Noncompetitive and Special Hiring Authority eligibles.  You may apply under open-competitive, and noncompetitive procedures, however; you must meet the requirements for one of the following categories to apply as a noncompetitive eligible.

1.
