The IHS is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN).   The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level.  IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal and Urban operated facilities and programs.   For information on the IHS visit IHS.GOV.

These positions are located within the Indian Health Service (IHS), Headquarters (HQ), Rockville, Maryland, in multiple major IHS Offices. The incumbent provides administrative, analytical and clerical support as a Staff Assistant to the Director and Deputy Director of various offices.

  • Provides staff support to the assigned Office staff by greeting and receiving telephone calls, routing and handing controlled correspondence, travel arrangements, appointments, iprocurement, and briefing material.
  • Manages the flow of office work for the Office Director and staff. As the office manager, is responsible for all timekeeping, travel, procurement activities and maintenance office documents in an organized manner.
  • Prepared and tracks sensitive documents for the Office, supports the Office with quarterly meetings; provides technical and administrative support to the Director and the staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You must demonstrate in your resume that you possess the education (if applicable) or one(1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:

 

Qualifications at the GS-5 level:

Education: Four (4) years above High School

Or

Specialized Experience:

Basic Knowledge which enables incumbent to work in an office environment where both the incumbent and the office have multiple responsibilities, deadlines and commitments. Setting up meetings and conferences, arranging official government travel documents for multiple staff members in a timely manner, preparing confidential correspondence and reports, and to prepares office and budget related projects. Provides clear, concise, and effective responses to routine inquiries for information, etc., and/or answering questions on basic knowledge of the program. Refers more technical matters to the appropria te Office staff member.

 

Qualifications at the GS-7   level:

Education: One (1) full year of graduate level education OR Superior academic achievement .

Or

Specialized Experience:

Independently having responsibility of deadlines and commitments in an office setting. Setting up meetings, conferences, arranging official government travel documents for multiple staff members in an effective timely manner, preparing various highly confidential correspondence and reports, and prepares office and budget related projects. Provides clear, concise, and effective responses to routine inquiries for information, etc., and/or answering questions on an index of knowledge of the program. Refers more technical matters to the appropria te Office staff member.

 

 

Qualifications at the GS-9   level:

Education: Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related.

Or

Specialized Experience:

Knowledge and understanding of mission objectives, goals, plans and administrative secretarial activities which entail having responsibility of deadlines and commitments in an office setting. Setting up meetings, conferences, arranging official government travel documents for multiple staff members in an effective timely manner, preparing various highly confidential correspondence and reports, and prepares office and budget related projects. Provides clear, concise, and effective responses to routine inquiries for information, etc., and/or answering questions on program operations including technical matters.
