The Pharmacy Department is seeking a Pharmacy Technician with extensive experience in pharmacy practices, hospital pharmacy practice, investigational drug protocols, and pharmaceuticals used in a laboratory/hospital environment. This position is located in the Pharmacy Department of the Clinical Center (CC).  Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians at the CC provide traditional pharmacy functions and also work closely with the Pharmacy's Pharmaceutical Development Section (PDS). As the Pharmacy Technician in the Clinical Center, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Answers phone calls and in person contacts on questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy staff regarding policies and procedures, drug availability, delivery times, drug costs, prescription status, tracking of prescriptions, and other pharmacy related issues;
  • Logs investigational drugs according to department policy to maintain inventory balance;
  • Determines when the pharmacist is to be immediately alerted to a therapeutic problem;
  • Performs final verification of simple non-sterile compounds, prepackages medication and provides documented monthly inspection of pharmacy and clinics;
  • Conducts controlled substance inventories and maintains inventory records and prepares and fills clinic/pharmacy order requests for controlled substances;
  • Receives and verifies drug deliveries;
  • Uses proper sterile techniques, manufactures sterile injections, including antineoplastic chemotherapy, used to treat patients in Clinical Center protocols to be delivered in the form of large volume, small volume, infusion syringe, etc.;
  • Coordinates activities of other pharmacy technicians of a lower grade, students, and residents when assigned to the unit;
  • Meets regularly with staff to share information and to plan and schedule projects;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Completed one half year (or 9 semester hours) of graduate education, or an internship, in pharmacy;
OR
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:  performing substantially all bulk compounding in the pharmacy including recognizing a typical occurrences and reporting problems to the pharmacist, after consulting with the pharmacist, making adjustments in amounts of ingredients to be mixed for special orders, performing a variety of standard assays on completed pharmaceutical products utilizing testing equipment and other analytical techniques, adjusting proper concentrations in solutions, and visual inspections; performing substantially all sterile solution operations in pharmacy including assuring adherence to sterile procedures, care of equipment, use of correct labeling materials and techniques during sterilization procedures, scheduling sterilization of bottles, and performance of standard assays on all completed solutions; and reading individual prescriptions and determining kind, strength, and dosage of drug to be dispensed while ensuring the correlation of instructions on the order with pharmacy policy limitations, and setting up prescriptions by obtaining correct stock container, counting or pouring correct amount of medication, and placing medication in smaller container.
