The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center is a 673-bed tertiary healthcare facility which provides care to over 100,000 veterans in northern Ohio.  We provide care through our main medical facility at the Wade Park campus, 13 community based outpatient clinics, and 3 vet centers. The medical center has been recognized for more programs of excellence than any other Veterans Affairs Medical Center.   These programs of excellence include: Open Heart Surgery, Care of the Seriously Mentally Ill, Geriatric Evaluation and Management, Substance Abuse Care, Spinal Cord Injury Care, Medical Care of the Homeless, Domiciliary Care of the Homeless, Functional Electrical Stimulation, Advance Platform Technology, Primary Care Education, and Patient-Centered Specialty Care Education.  We are a teaching hospital providing a full range of patient care services to Veterans with state-of-the art technology as well as medical education and research. Our main campus in Cleveland, OH has a full service ER for both general acute care and psychiatric care and a comprehensive reference clinical laboratory. There is a vacancy for an Associate Chief Nurse in Ambulatory Care within Nursing Service at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. The incumbent will report to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services (Nurse Executive). The incumbent will be an experienced leader for the outpatient clinical areas. The Associate Chief Nurse will assume responsibility for 24/7 management and supervision of patient care programs that promote quality nursing care and effective utilization of personnel within the following areas of assignment: Primary Care Clinics/Patient Aligned Care Teams(PACT), Specialty Care Clinics, Short Stay Unit (SSU), Emergency Department, Hemodialysis (acute care and free standing ambulatory care center), Pre-Operative Clinic, Telehealth Nursing Program, Telephone Nursing Triage, and Women’s Health Clinic. The Associate Chief Nurse will act as a Nursing Service representative to Medical Center committees and task groups.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by a State-accrediting agency and by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • MSN or Master’s degree in related field with BSN (If MSN obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN required) or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years successful administrative nursing practice.
  • Experience at the Assistant or Associate Chief Nurse level or equivalent.
  • Advanced leadership abilities and skills in previous management assignments.
  • Ability to be self-directed, function independently, and work effectively with others at all levels within the organization.
  • Skills in problem solving, planning and implementing corrective actions or new programs to improve the overall delivery of patient care.
  • Creativity and skill in position management, budget processes, and other cost containment initiatives in promoting optimal standards in care delivery.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable, set priorities and develop innovative responses to challenges.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in computer utilization and software.
  • Current Ambulatory Care or Nurse Executive national certification.
  • Knowledgeable about JCAHO, SOARS, CARF, and other accrediting agencies.
