Every day, our Immigration Officers (FDNS) provide guidance to field Immigration Officers in Center Fraud Detection Units, conduct research for the purpose of enhancing current policies and procedures, identify, articulate, and pursue suspected immigration benefit fraud.

As an Immigration Officer (FDNS), you will be responsible for enhancing the USCIS Fraud Detection and National Security (FDNS) program and identifying and addressing issues relative to U.S. national security and public safety. You will:

  • Perform site inspections to verify information from immigration benefits applications and petitions submitted to USCIS, perform in-person interviews in office settings as well as in residences, places of employment and worship, and other locations throughout the community and provide detailed reports of your findings upon completion of a site inspection.
  • Take sworn testimonies, administer oaths, have limited contact with attorneys, and by issuance of subpoenas, compel the attendance of witnesses and the production of documents.
  • Access USCIS data systems and other law enforcement and commercial databases to extract information concerning background checks and assist in the detection of fraud.

GS-09: You qualify at the GS-9 level if you possess one of the following:

  • One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Searching for and analyzing information from records/databases to assist in the detection of fraud. Providing assistance to analysts in the gathering of data, preparing documentation, creating reports related to background checks. Researching and collecting information from databases to determine if information vets to a subject and the extent of derogatory information. Interviewing database record holders and law enforcement officers to verify facts and obtain specific information. Securing conviction records. Performing record searches; OR
  • You may substitute successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in an accredited college or university for experience required at the GS-9 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the skills necessary to do the work. A course of study in business administration, public administration, or related fields is qualifying. One year of fulltime graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 36 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 2 years of full-time study requirement.


EDUCATIONAL SUBSTITUTION:

Appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience also may be used to meet the total qualification requirements for the GS-9 grade levels.

Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on the closing date of this announcement (Friday, January 11, 2013).

Motor Vehicle Operation: This position requires operation of a motor vehicle. You must possess a current valid driver's license.

Travel: Frequent local travel is required.

Training: New recruits will attend a 6-week BASIC training program in Dallas, Texas (if not previously attended) and a 2-week Site Inspection training program in Dallas, Texas. This technical training must be successfully completed according to the standards of the agency. Failure to do so will be grounds for mandatory removal from the position. Such failure will result in either reassignment to a different position, demotion, or separation by appropriate procedures.
