The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking a Chief of Staff with proven leadership skills, and a record of academic achievement who can build upon the strengths of the current clinical services.  The distinguished professional must possess a MD or MD/PhD degree, be board certified, and licensed.  The ICVAHCS includes the level 1 tertiary care medical center with 83 licensed beds, seven surrounding community based outpatient clinics, and two more community based outpatient clinics opening within the year.  The system provides care to over 40,000 veterans and covers an area of 46 counties within eastern Iowa and western Illinois. 


This executive position is multi-faceted and is responsible for leadership, clinical coordination, and the evaluation of clinical programs while promoting the development of healthcare professionals through counseling, mentoring, and teaching.  The medical center has an exceptionally strong affiliation with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.  The facility has a strong teaching mission which can be reflected in the education opportunities it provides to over 500 medical students, residents, and fellows each year.  In addition, research is another important aspect of the mission at the ICVAHCS.  For the past 15 years, the research program has been named one of the “VA’s top ten” research programs in the nation. 


The Chief of Staff monitors and ensures medical staff compliance with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, VA facility policies, the Joint Commission Standards and other certifying and accrediting bodies.  The Chief of Staff will also serve as a professional liaison of the healthcare field to other VA, federal, community, affiliate, media, congressional, and constituent organizations.

Salary range to commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Relocation expenses may be paid.  Guaranteed Home Buyout (GHBO) may be authorized.  Recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized.

Licensure and Registration


     (1)  Physicians (Except Residents).  Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.  The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.  The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.



The Chief of staff must have proven leadership skills, and a record of academic achievement who can build upon the strengths of the current clinical services. 


Education.  The distinguished professional must possess a MD or MD/PhD degree, be board certified, and licensed.


Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.


For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.
