JOB SUMMARY:

The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is the data collection and dissemination arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. NASS gathers and publishes a vast array of information on every facet of U.S. agriculture, including production, economics, demographics, and the environment. 

 

At the Fairfax, VA site, statistical and survey research is conducted to improve NASS processes.

 

The employee serves as secretary to the Director of the Research and Development Division at NASS.

Major Duties:

 

  • Acts as the point of contact and liaison within the Agency
  • Maintains supervisor's calendar, screens calls, directs inquiries
  • Establishes and maintaining a system of files for the office, ensuring that all pertinent items are properly filed
  • Arranges meetings
  • Makes travel arrangements, processes vouchers 
  • Performs timekeeping duties
  • Records and reconciles budget data
  • Drafts and reviews reports and correspondence
  • Assists supervisors with administrative process of procurement systems and policies
  • Processes and maintains cooperative agreements

To qualify at the GS-08 grade level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level which includes maintaining files, preparing correspondence, greeting visitors, recording and reconciling budgets, maintaining supervisor's schedule and preparing travel authorizations and vouchers.

 

To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level which includes receiving and reviewing incoming mail, screening material that can be personally handled and routing the remainder to supervisor or other responsible personnel for review and response, preparing international travel, processing and maintaining cooperative agreements, and proficiency with procurement systems.

 

 


A minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute is required.  You must self-certify your typing speed through the online questionnaire.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies:

  • Knowledge of administrative procedures, including procurement, to provide office support
  • Ability to deal effectively with others in order to provide customer assistance

  • Skill in using word processing and spreadsheets software to develop reports and charts
  • Ability to make arrangements for travel and prepare authorizations
