This position is located in the Maintenance Department at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. The electrician is responsible for installing, modifying, repairing, troubleshooting and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment. This position involves the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in industrial, institutional, and office buildings. The electrician is responsible for following the maintenance schedule and inspections or work orders, performing maintenance and minor construction services, diagnoses system or equipment malfunction and repairs as necessary.

·         Assess the make-up, operation, and installation of a variety of electrical systems, circuits, equipment, and controls such as wiring systems in buildings, power and control circuits and distribution panels.

·         Plan, layout, and complete the installation, modification, and repair of various systems, circuits, equipment and controls such as the routing, placement, balance, load, continuity, and proper safe operation of circuits and controls to machinery and lighting, heating, and security systems within commercial buildings.

·         Follow the maintenance schedule and inspections or work orders, performing maintenance and minor construction services, diagnoses system or equipment malfunction and repairs as necessary.

·         Work from blue prints, plans wiring diagrams, engineer drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plans and lay out the routing, placement, type, size gauge, balance, load continuity, and proper and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls.

·         Determine and install wiring, conduit, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices in the size, type, shape, and arrangement, needed for proper and safe operation of electrical systems, circuits, and equipment in compliance with national Electrical Code.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.  Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is:  ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL such as: working from electrical or electromechanical blueprints, manufacturers manuals, and schematics to test, install and repair electrical equipment (i.e., motors and controls) in shops or industrial/commercial areas.  Planning and laying out work and determine work sequence. Troubleshooting problems in circuit diagrams used to install and replace generators, motors and motor controllers, transformers, switchboxes, circuit breakers, etc., on single phase or multiphase circuits in commercial (non-residential) buildings. Using a variety of hand tools and portable power tools, such as screw drivers, pliers, wire cutters, strippers, drills, soldering irons, and manual or power conduit benders and threaders, and some test equipment (i.e., multimeters, meggers, test lamps, and ammeters).
