Working as an Architect in the Office of Research Facilities (ORF), Division of Technical Resources (DTR), you will:

 

  • Serve as a consultant to project officers and contractors. 
  • Perform ad-hoc reviews of contract documents, design, and construction contract submissions including shop drawings and as-builts.
  • Participate in NIH campus-wide working groups for architectural review boards and other committees that require architectural systems, particularly those for buildings of major size and complexity. 
  • Participate in the Commissioning Processes to ensure that facilities perform as intended and provide analysis and reccomend solutions and cost effective alternatives for systems in need of repair or replacement. 
  • Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in architecture, current codes, and standards in order to apply current technology to policies in development and to review and update new or existing policy.
  • Provide technical support and expertise for writing and consulting on policy development related to architecture and interiors, and providing assistance with developing Guide Specifications.
  • Review project design submittal to the NIH Design Review Process to ensure compliance with the NIH architectural design criteria in the Design Requirements Manual and other codes, standards, guidelines, and criteria required to build a quality facility within a specified budget and schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You must meet the Minimum Education requirements for the Architect position from the following options:

A. I qualify for this position because I have a Degree in: architecture; or related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

B. I qualify for this position because I have a combination of education and experience--college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: Related Curriculum: Degree in architectural engineering may be accepted as satisfying in full the basic requirements provided the completed course work in architectural engineering provided knowledge, skills, and abilities substantially equivalent to those provided in the courses. The curriculum for a degree in either architecture or architectural engineering covers function, esthetics, site, structure, economics, mechanical-electrical, and other engineering problems related to the design and construction of buildings primarily (but not exclusively) intended to house human activities.

C. I qualify for this position because I have the following Experience: An applicant lacking a degree in architecture must have had l year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that the applicant has acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.

 

GS-12 Applicants:  In addition to meeting the minimum educational requirements listed above, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government.  Examples of qualifying experience include: performing planning and design work for substantial multi-phase new construction, renovation, and improvement projects; conducting site investigations and evaluating data to determine feasibility, topography, and site configuration or condition of structure; preparing detailed fee estimates; monitoring project progress; resolving problems or conflict impeding progress; performing final acceptance inspections; complying with health, safety and environmental rules and procedures; and developing state-of-the-art architectural presentations utilizing AutoCAD.   

 

GS-13 Applicants:  In addition to meeting the minimum educational requirements listed above, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government. Examples of qualifying experience include: planning and designing work for substantial multi-phase new construction, renovation, and improvement projects; leading site investigations and evaluating data obtained; determining the execution plan for the project, including contract vehicles; participating in A/E evaluation and selection process; monitoring project reviews, readjusting money, schedules and work; resolving problems or conflicts impeding progress; performing final acceptance inspections and completing all administrative actions required to close out assignment project; complying with health, safety and environmental rules and procedures; and using the AutoCAD program  and other project tracking programs.  View Assessment Questions
