JOB SUMMARY:

As a Legal Assistant you will perform various quasi-legal duties that are clerical and administrative in nature such as entering of case-related data into a computer, processing of correspondence and documents pertaining to litigation and processing Chief Counsel documents for public disclosure.

The Associate Chief Counsel, Procedure & Administration located in Washington, DC, comprises approximately 100 attorneys and 80 support personnel. The primary work areas provide legal services in federal tax procedure and administration. The office's responsibilities include legal issues arising out of the assessment and collection of federal taxes, bankruptcy, ethics, abatement, credits, refunds of federal taxes, judicial proceedings, and disclosure of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act matters.

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-05.  If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position. - Enter case-related data into a computer system. - Process correspondence and documents pertaining to litigation.- Maintain vital control records that are essential to the control and planning of the division. - Process checks. - Process requests for Freedom of Information Act information. - Process Chief Counsel documents for public disclosure.

In order for your application to be considered, you must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:


GS-04: You must have one year of general experience. General experience for this position includes: receiving and distributing mail; inputting information into a computer system; creating and searching files.  GS-05: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: opening and closing legal case files; inputting legal information into a computer system; initiating and composing standardized legal documents routinely needed for specific legal actions; receiving, processing, and reviewing legal documents; maintaining docket or court calendar; and attending and keeping a record of all court proceedings. The experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.  OR

You may substitute education for general/specialized experience as follows:

GS-04: 2 years above high school. GS-05: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school. OR

You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.

Category Rating will be used to rank and select eligible candidates. If qualified, you will be assigned to one of three categories, A, B, or C, depending on your experience and education related to this position. Veterans' preference is applied after applicants are assessed.
