Duty Location: Atlanta VA Medical Center – Decatur, GA

 

You will perform assignments of decontamination in a medical and surgical facility requiring a complete range of medical supplies, instruments, equipment instrument preparation, maintenance and supply including storage and issue. You will provide wards, clinics, operating rooms and other hospital facilities with sterile and non sterile medical supplies, instruments, sets, and equipment. You will process, disassemble, clean, and decontaminate supply items. You will perform all other related duties as assigned.

 

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:  Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.  Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.  Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.


 

Work Schedule: Full-Time Employment: Rotating Shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays

For GS-6:

 

Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience to perform the duties of this position.  To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include but are not limited to: in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment; possessing of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; using of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; using of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.  Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.  Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~

 

 

For GS-6:

 

Possess at least nine (9) semester hours of graduate level of education directly to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. For GS-6:

 

Possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level of education as described (above) combined to meet the total experience requirements for the GS-6 grade level. NOTE: To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level.  Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.  Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

 

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  1. Knowledge of physical characteristics and functions of surgical supplies and instruments.
  2. Knowledge of basic principles of microbiology as it applies to medical supply operations.
  3. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of people from different background and levels.
  4. Knowledge of aseptic techniques and principles based upon a sound understanding of cleaning techniques.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday, and frequent bending and lifting of supply packages (occasionally weighing as much as 25 pounds). The employee regularly pushes loaded carts weighing several hundred pounds, aligns them on tracks leading to automatic transport systems in sometimes crowded quarters, and works them over slight rises such as door sills.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

  • Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
  • Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
  • Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
  • Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
