JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

This is a Forestry Technician (Forest Aviation Officer) on the Fire & Aviation Management Staff on the Angeles National Forest.  For additional information about the duties of this position, please contact Jim Hall at (626) 574-1613 or email jhall02@fs.fed.us.

This position serves as a staff assistant to a Fire Management Officer (FMO) or Assistant Fire Management Officer (AFMO) to provide guidance and direction for all Forest aviation operations and may serve as a Air Tactical Officer on an as needed basis for a Regional Air Attack unit exclusive use contract aircraft covering most iinteragency lands in and adjacent to the National Forest. if IQCS qualifications are met.   Air Tactical Group Supervisor (ATGS) qualifications are not required for this position.

Basic Qualifications:Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience directly related to this position should be documented in the online application or resume. 

 

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:  

 

For the GS-10 level, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-09:   Assisted in the overall management of an aviation program for an assigned field location; ; Assisted in developing and implementing written policies, programs and practices for an air operations program; Assisted in the overall management of an aviation program for an assigned field location.

 

For the GS-11 level, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-10:     Providing oversight in the planning, development and performance of aircraft used to perform low risk support activities. Reviewed operational procedures in order to secure aircraft best suited for the activity. Ensured that safety procedures were followed when operating aircraft; acting as Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) on aviation contracts; Directed and coordinated aviation resources in support of fire suppression, prescribed fire and resource management for an assigned field location.

    

Substitution of Education for Experience:

 For the GS-10 and GS-11 there is no substitution of education for experience for this position.

 

Combination of Education and Experience:

 

For the GS-10 and GS-11 level,  there is no combination of education and experience for this position.

 

Selective Placement Factors:

 

A minimum 90 days experience performing wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practices under various conditions. This experience must be documented with specific dates in the online application or resume.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire. There is no age limit for entry into secondary positions. Firefighter retirement coverage of the incumbent depends upon his or her individual work history.
