JOB SUMMARY:

US Army Veterinary Services operates as a subsidiary of Public Health Command. Their mission is to provide military veterinary services in support of United States Army Medical Command and Department of Defense missions. The civilian function of the Veterinary Services is a supplemental mission which exists to assist soldiers and their families in the field of animal health and care.

This is a Flexible position at the Dyess AFB Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF). We are looking for a friendly, hard working, team oriented individual that is willing to serve clients and learn about Veterinary Medicine. The job will include: preparing medical charts, checking in patients, taking vital signs, discussing pet health care topics with owners, administering medicines and vaccines, writing in patient medical charts, cleaning and organizing supplies, monitoring patients during anesthesia/surgery, perfoming dental cleanings, holding animals for procedures, taking x-rays, obtaining patient blood/urine/fecal samples, performing in-house diagnostic tests, conducting supply inventory counts. Employees in Flexible positions can be scheduled between 00 to 39 hours per week depending on management.

Incumbent actively participates in the management of the organization by performing a wide variety of clerical and administrative duties. Serves as the central point of contact for matters related to day-to-day operations under the general supervision of a veterinarian. Executes routine tasks without supervision. Work is checked for compliance with established procedures and regulations, veterinary instructions, and treatment of animals. Applies knowledge of the organization, its functions, and regulations to carry out a wide variety of administrative processes. Maintains the Veterinary Clinic's automated database. Responsible for the care of animals and the cleanliness of the facility per standard operating procedures, policies, regulations, and directives.

Observes animal's behavior, health, and appearance. Reports illness, disease, and injury to supervisor. Inspects animals for fleas, ticks, or other parasites and reports any cases as directed by the veterinarian. Feeds and waters the animals. Cleans and disinfects animal kennels and cages per the Animal Facility Policy. Assists or performs euthanasia as directed by the veterinarian and in accordance with humane AVMA guidelines. Takes temperature, vaccinates, de-worms, microchips, and examines stray animals for adoption or returning to owner as required. Administers treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian, such as oral medications, subcutaneous vaccinations or medications.

May perform venipuncture blood draws and run various laboratory tests as prescribed by the veterinarian. Operates a motor vehicle to pickup supplies, deliver packages, or animals as needed. Follows applicable safety rules and regulations. Duties involve moderate to heavy physical effort including lifting various items such as animals, feed, and supplies occasionally weighing up to 70 pounds. Moderate effort required in scrubbing, scraping, sanitizing kennels and operating power-washing equipment. Considerable standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time required. Bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, grasping, reaching, and twisting are all required while performing these duties. Incumbent is subjected to noise, dust, odors, feces, urine, parasites, and blood. Work is performed inside and outside with exposure to hot, cold, and windy weather conditions. This incumbent must have the mental, physical, verbal, visual, and audio ability to perform the duties outlined in this job in both a safe and satisfactory manner.

Highly Preferred Criteria: Possess experience working with Veterinary Practice Management Software (i.e. AVImark). And knowledge of basic medical veterinary terminology.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies: Minimum Qualifications, Highly Preferred Criteria, Skill in Veterinary Processes, Verbal Communication and Written Communication.

 

Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid experience or volunteer work.

Applicants meeting the best qualified criteria will be referred first to the Selecting Official. All other applicants will be referred for consideration if the certificate (referral list) is returned with no selection.
