This announcement will be used  to establish a deferred inventory of individuals interested in a  Computer Scientist (CS) position with the FBI.  It is not indicative of a  specific or current vacancy, but is posted to gather a register of  resumes for future FY 2013 CS vacancies, which are pending budgetary  approval.  As vacancies occur (an ongoing process), this register will  be utilized to match a candidates' education, skills, experiences and  location preference against specific vacancy requirements.

Salary listed above is Federal BASE Salary.  Actual salary will vary depending on location and applicability of the Special Salary Rate Table.

Computer Scientist at the GS 7/9 level at the FBI involves a variety of common problems, questions, or situations involving investigative, operational, and intelligence missions and requirements that are dealt with in accordance with established criteria.  Work affects the overall operation or support of FBI mission and implementation of FBI policies.

  • Performs basic computer system and network procurement, installation, administration and security
  • Troubleshoots, and modifies existing cyber tools and methods to identify, preserve, and analyze digital evidence, and assists with implementation of custom tools
  • Provides technical assistance in conducting interviews, searches and other investigative activity
  • Provides courtroom testimony
  • Remains current with new advances in cyber and technology topics and provide guidance on such matters

The qualifications listed below are in addition to the Basic Requirements previously described.

 

GS 7: Applicants must have one (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the GS 5 grade level. 

 

- Uses existing tools and methods to identify, preserve, and analyze digital evidence

- Assists with implementation of custom tools, techniques, and procedures used to address unique investigative situations

- Provides basic technical and other professional assistance in conducting interviews, searches and other investigative, operational, liaison, and/or outreach activity

- Assists in drafting documents on basic technical and other professional matters

 

GS 9: Applicant must have one (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the GS 7 grade level.

 

In addition to the above duties of the GS 7, applicants must also possess:

 

- Troubleshoots, and modifies as needed existing tools and methods to identify, preserve and analyze digital evidence

- Assists with the development of custom tools and methods to identify, analyze, and preserve digital evidence

- Assists in drafting documents on more advanced technical matters

 

EDUCATION MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR EXPERIENCE AS FOLLOWS:

 

GS 7: 1 full year of graduate-level education or a bachelor's degree and meet the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement. Which is: (1) class standing; (2) a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, as recorded on an official college transcript, or as computed based on courses completed during the final two years of curriculum; or (3) honor society membership.

 

GS 9: 2 full years of  progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree (i.e., LL.B. or J.D.).

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements, provided you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.


BASIC REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, AND computer science. (15 of the 30 semester hours MUST have been in any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.) Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies are acceptable; courses in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.

The Computer Scientist position requires all personnel hired to attend the Computer Scientist Field Operations Training (FOT) course that lasts up to 7 weeks in duration.  During the training the employee will be staying in one of the dorm facilities located at The FBI Training Academy at Quantico, VA.  Meals will be provided during the training course. 

 

Unless an employee has attended the FBI's Onboarding New Employees (ONE) training, HE/SHE will be required to attend that as well.   Attendance is mandatory and will make the total training (ONE and CS-FOT) 8 weeks. 


By apply to this position the employee is accepting these terms and understands that HE/SHE will have to stay at the FBI Academy for up to 8 weeks to complete training.
