The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is actively recruiting a

Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

 

Candidate will work within the Mental Health Care Line. The incumbent will demonstrate a high level of autonomy in the management of patients experiencing the sequlae of mental illness on inpatient units across the medical center on a consultative basis.

 

Requirements:

 

Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification required

 

 

**Per the VA Handbook 5005/27 any Advanced Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist hired after March 17, 2009 must have a certification in the specialty in which the individual is being appointed or selected. This also applies to any of our employees who graduated from an Advanced Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist program after March 17, 2009. For example: If a APN is certified in Family Practice, Adult, or Women’s Health they should not be APN/CNS in Mental Health providing MH care. They can provide Medical Care to the Psychiatric patient but not PTSD therapy, SUD, MHICM, etc… Similarly, a Mental Health APN/CNS cannot provide comprehensive Women’s Health. There is no waiver just because an nurse has experience in a particular area. Of note, if the Advanced Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist was appointed/hired prior to March 17, 2009- they are grandfathered in.

 Responsibilities: 

Administrative requirements and required competencies include:

·            Ability to work effectively with and as a part of the interdisciplinary team.

·            Demonstrated advanced application and mastery of clinical knowledge and skills for provision of Mental Health Care in an inpatient medical/surgical setting.

·            Ability to utilize the nursing process in the management of life-threatening interventions.

·            Ability to coordinate the resolution of bio-ethical issues (such as capacity to make medical decisions or give informed consent) with patients, families, and significant others.

·            Knowledge and ability to conduct Psychiatric Evaluations and identify co-morbidities.

·            Ability to manage psychopharmacological interventions including prescribing or recommending pharmacologic agents and ordering and interpretation of diagnostic and laboratory test.

·            Ability to identify and coordinate the resolution of interdisciplinary patient care problems.

·            Excellent communication skills as well as the ability to correspond and report in an accurate and timely manner.

·            Demonstrated dependability and flexibility.

·            Computer literacy for data input and retrieval required.

·            Ability to assess and manage safety risk (suicidality, aggression), including use of medications and need for transfer to an inpatient psychiatric unit.

·            Ability to manage common psychiatric issues on a medical/surgical unit, including delirium, behavioral issues from dementia, substance withdrawal, depression, anxiety, and psychosis. 

·            Anticipation of possible escalation of psychiatric symptoms and proactive interventions to minimize exacerbation of issues.   

Physical Standards and Environmental Factors

Compliant with the following physical standards and environmental factors;

  • Heavy lifting, 50 pounds & over

  • Heavy carrying, 50 pounds & over

  • Straight pulling (1-2 hours)

  • Pushing (1-2 hours)

  • Walking (2-4 hours)

  • Standing (2-6 hours)

  • Use of fingers

  • Both hands required;

  • Ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously

  • Near Vision correctable

  • Far Vision correctable

  • Depth perception

  • Hearing (aide permitted)

  • Work closely with others, as well as, protracted or irregular hours of work

  • Use stretchers to transfer patients and use patient lifts, if applicable

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

·         MSN from an NLN accredited program as an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner.

·         Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner.

·         Certification by a National Credentialing examination in the area of Mental Health graduate studies.

·         ACLS certified.

·        State prescription authority.

·          A Minimum of 3 Years of Mental Nursing Experience Strongly Preferred

 Citizen of the United States.  Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.    Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
