About the Position:

  • You will serve as the Operating Room Floor Coordinator and Utilization Management Registered Nurse for the Department of Anesthesia and Operative Services (DOAOS) in a 14 room Operating Room Suite at a Level two trauma and teaching facility.

    Floor Coordinator: Coordinates the patient care for beneficiaries undergoing surgical procedures ranging from routine to high acuity or trauma cases with highly complex surgical care requirements. Delegates patient care and assigns work to other registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, operating room technicians, and nursing assistants, with consideration of the difficulty and requirements of the assignment and the qualifications and capabilities of each individual. Complexity of decision making and prioritization is increased by the requirement to provide competent workers for seventeen different surgical specialties. Make independent perioperative nursing judgments and appropriately takes action based on moment-to-moment changes in the surgical schedule and/or patients' conditions and responses. Coordinates and ensures timely arrival of patients to the operating room. Coordinates with other services/departments as required for diagnostic tests and procedures. Advises attending physicians of significant changes in a patient's condition and/or changes in the OR schedule.


    Utilization Management/Process Improvement: Collaborates with staff on defining utilization management and performance improvement initiatives for the Department of Anesthesia and Operative Services. Develop department process improvement plans such as assessing surgical operations management, analyzing surgical process variability factors, and conducting patient flow assessments. Incorporates clinical and management knowledge of the perioperative process, data analysis, business process reengineering, and information management to develop metrics and analyze data. Uses data obtained to make recommendations for redesigning surgical processes and procedures to improve Operating Room process efficiency.


    Supervision: Responsible for performance management of employees in the Utilization Management section to include assigning work, establishing job-related expectations, conducting performance related discussions and preparing performance appraisals.


    As an expert in the nursing care of patients in the perioperative arena, you will serve as a resource and role model for other health care providers, including experienced and fully trained registered nurses and physician residents. Serve as preceptor/instructor for newly assigned nurses, Army nurses from the Army's Perioperative Nursing Course, and BSN students from local colleges.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree: Applicants MUST have a degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Licensure/Certification: Applicants MUST have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Specialized Experience: You MUST clearly demonstrate in your resume that you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower level, as a Registered Nurse, demonstrating expert knowledge in the nursing care of patients in the perioperative arena.
  • Education Substitution: If an applicant meets the basic requirements for Education and Registration/Licensure but fails to meet the required one (1) year of specialized experience; Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education can be substituted at the GS-11 Level.

  • Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
