Summer Honors Program

The Securities and Exchange Commission is now hiring first-year law students for its 2013 Summer Honors Program in Washington and 11 other cities. Though these are volunteer positions, they offer students responsibilities and experiences that promote their careers. Over the course of the ten-week program, students work with Commission staff on projects particular to the Division or Office to which they are assigned. Students participate in seminars/workshops on various aspects of the federal securities laws. We ask that our interns commit 40-hours per week for 10 weeks.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Relocation expenses will not be paid.

DUTIES:

We have high expectations for our interns, often assigning them the same work we would give a newly-hired staff attorney who had completed law school. Students assist with tasks such as drafting regulations, reviewing filings, or preparing for interviews and testimony. They spend hours every day with line attorneys, and they support senior executives.

The Summer Honors Program is highly-competitive.  We hire as few as 10% of the students who apply, and we limit the size of the program so that students receive substantive work.  Most first year law interns from past programs have gone on to work their second summer at law firms.  Many pursue jobs that relate to securities, finance or related industries, but others have pursued other specialties while still using the skills that they learned at the SEC.

For more information about the SEC’s summer program, see the SEC’s Web site, including “frequently asked questions” at (click here). The Web site offers more information about the program, intern experiences, and the SEC, including a page that describes the intern responsibilities for many offices and divisions (click here).

For summer 2013, the SEC anticipates having Summer Honors Program interns in the following offices at the SEC’s Washington DC headquarters:

Division of Corporation Finance

Division of Enforcement

Division of Investment Management

Division of Risk, Strategy, and Financial Innovation

Division of Trading & Markets

Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations

Office of Credit Ratings

Office of International Affairs

Office of the General Counsel

Office of the Inspector General

Office of Equal Employment Opportunity

Office of Minority and Women Inclusion

In addition, the SEC anticipates hiring Summer Honors Program interns in its regional offices:

Atlanta Regional Office

Boston Regional Office

Los Angeles Regional Office

Miami Regional Office

New York Regional Office

Philadelphia Regional Office

Salt Lake Regional Office

San Francisco Regional Office
