The incumbent is assigned to Social Services and is responsible for planning, developing and implementing Social Work activities in assigned segments of the Ambulatory Care Section of Social Services. The incumbent will provide services in accordance with his/her Scope of Practice and will employ a complete range of advanced social work methods, individually or with groups, without regard to complexity of a given problem.

 

The incumbent accepts and supports the guiding principles of the Medical Center, performing assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, outstanding customer service, and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving veterans.

 

The incumbent actively supports the team concept and functions as a team player, contributing to team initiatives and continuously striving to improve the effectiveness of the team(s) to which he/she is assigned. The incumbent has responsibility for planning, developing, and implementing Social Work duties to patients and their families related to the personal and psychosocial implications of hospitalization, medical treatment, post hospital care, rehabilitation, as well as problems of aging and chronic disability. Services range from routine to extremely complicated, with the more complicated cases involving depression, death/dying, complex advance directive decisions, and major adjustment to chronic, debilitating illness including both medical and psychiatric conditions.

 

Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, must be proficient in written and spoken English and must be licensed or certified at the Master's level to independently practice social work in a state.

LICENSURE: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR ALL GRADES: Applicant must possess a Master's Degree in Social Work at a college or university accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. You must submit an unofficial transcript to receive credit for this education. (An official college transcript will be required before being hired).

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-11 LEVEL: Requires one year of professional social work experience equivalent to the GS-9 level, under qualified social work supervision. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic - medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in a collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.) Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Master's Degree in Social Work.

SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 LEVEL: To meet the required specialized experience for the GS-11 level, applicant may substitute a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work. You must submit a transcript to receive credit for this education.
