The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is looking for temporary employees to work as a Lead Wildland Firefighter (Lead Range/Forestry Tech) located throughout Utah.

Positions at the GS-6 level have been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been classified as a Senior Firefighter (SFF), and is subject to meeting the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. A Lead Wildland Firefighter (GS-06 Lead Range/Forestry Technician) Serves as a lead wildland firefighter performing the following duties: locates fireline, directs and participates in fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine operations, tree falling and holding/patrol mop-up operations. Serves as a lead wildland firefighter on a prescribed fire crew. Performs prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up. Monitors fire behavior, fire effects, and fire weather on prescribed fires and wildland fire use. Serves as a lead wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine. Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, positioning the engine for proper use and operation. Personally performs and directs others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives. May serve as a lead wildland firefighter on a helitack crew. Leads the fire suppression efforts of the helicopter module. Directs the loading of helicopter personnel and cargo considering weight and balance, securing cargo, etc. Completes manifests of personnel and equipment being transported to the fire or other work sites. Inventories and inspects helicopter accessories, fire tools, and equipment. Assures that needed tools and equipment are available for fire fighting tasks. In addition to performing all of the above duties, provides daily leadership and training for the crew members. Serves as a working leader. May also lead additional technicians and detailers. Instructs crew members in specific tasks and techniques; conducts on-the-job training; distributes and controls work assignments among employees, assures timely accomplishment of assigned tasks; maintains work notes and records; reports on work accomplishments, ensures that the work is carried out safely; reports on performance problems and issues. Responsible for supervision of the crew in the absence of the supervisor. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.

To qualify for a GS-06, you must meet at least one of the following AND the Selective Factor:
- 12 months of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-5 level duties. Examples include on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work; operating and maintaining specialized wildland fire tools/equipment/vehicles and may include leading crewmembers. OR
- 9 semester/12 quarter hours credit of graduate education directly related to this position; OR
- a combination of education and experience that is directly related to the work of this position.

SELECTIVE FACTOR for GS-06: In addition to the basic qualifications listed above, you must have the following for the GS-06: You must possess the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training to be considered eligible for the GS-6 position.

1. Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1); And

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/TESTING: You must pass an initial pre-employment physical examination and must be able to pass the work capacity fitness test (Must carry a 45 lb pack for 3 miles within 45 minutes). Failure to meet any of the required medical qualifications will disqualify you for employment. Any condition, which would cause you to be a hazard to yourself or to others, will disqualify you for employment.

DRUG TESTING: BLM POSITIONS ARE SUBJECT TO RANDOM DRUG TESTING. If selected for a random drug test, it must be completed prior to beginning work. The drug test will be provided at Government direction and expense. Once hired, employees are also subject to random drug testing during employment.

Temporary employees hired in wildland fire or wildland fire support positions are eligible for the following:
•  Annual and Sick Leave
•  Depending on tour of duty – Sunday, holiday, shift differential and/ or hazard pay
•  Paid federal holidays
•  Participation in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program - Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles.  After separating from federal employment, employees will be offered to continue participation in FEHB under the Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) option. Employees electing to continue coverage under the TCC provision will be responsible for the full premium amount plus a 2% administration fee.
