The National Defense University (NDU) seeks to hire the Director of Research and Strategic Support.

NDU is the premier national security institution focused on advanced joint education, leader development and scholarship.  Under the direction and leadership of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the oversight of the Director for Joint Force Development, Joint Staff (J-7), NDU offers a collegial and collaborative academic environment to support the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders who have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world.


The mission of the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) is to conduct research in support of the academic and leader development programs at NDU, and to provide strategic support to the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Unified Combatant Commands.  INSS includes the following Centers: the Center for Strategic Research (CSR), the Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs (CSCMA), the Center for Technology and National Security Policy (CTNSP), the Center for Complex Operations (CCO), the Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC), and the National Defense University Press (NDU Press).


The NDU Director of Research and Strategic Support serves as the Director, Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) and is the University senior leader directly accountable to the NDU President to ensure research and strategic support priorities are properly balanced to both align with the NDU mission focus on JPME and leader development, as well as to provide policy support to the Joint Staff and the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). This requires that the incumbent possess a strong ability to lead, manage, and coordinate a multi-dimensional and complex research effort across the breadth and depth of the NDU enterprise to leverage the extant intellectual capacity in the teaching and research faculties of the University's colleges, centers, and outreach components.

  • Coordinates with the Provost, leaders of the JPME colleges, the centers, and the other components throughout the University to determine the priorities and plans for the NDU research that supports JPME and leader development.


  •  Ensures new knowledge flows into the curricula and fosters continuous learning by NDU curricula and planning.


  • Develops relevant and realistic research projects in which students and faculty work on 'real world' challenges to support the Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS).

  • Participates with NDU leadership and provides recommendations on appropriate budget and programming activities for NDU research across the enterprise.

  • Plans, programs, and directs research activities to establish policies, procedures, and short- and long-range goals.

  • Integrates innovative scholarship on the resiliency, ethical, and character elements of leader development and education into the NDU programs.

  • Serves as the vanguard in the art and science of student-centric learning and development.

    • Applicants should have relevant academic and/or senior professional experience, to include a strong record of research and publication, in a field relevant to the mission.
    • Demonstrated experience in working with creative, innovative and imaginative concepts and approaches in education and research.
    • Possession of a doctoral or other terminal degree in a appropriate discipline.
    • Successful applicants will have demonstrated experience  in leadership and achievement in managing senior level employees.


    1. Knowledge of research and analytic methodologies to direct research activities.
    2. Knowledge of corporate/private sector budgeting and programming resources.
    3. Knowledge of private sector business processes, practices and strategies, and  demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with industry
    4. Ability to manage a multi-dimensional and complex research environment.
    5. Ability to lead and manage senior level employees.

    Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance

    Employee will be subject to random drug testing

    Travel requirement for this position is occasionally (20 - 30% of the time).

    • This is a National Defense University (NDU) civilian faculty position as provided under Title 10. The first year of employment will be probationary. Appointment NTE 3 years; may be renewed in one to three year increments thereafter.
