This position is located in the Navy Public Works Center Norfolk, Norfolk Production Office, Philadelphia PA. The Navy Public Works Center is a regionalized command. You will operate gasoline and diesel powered truck or truck tractor with trailer or semi-trailer coupled by use of turntable or pintle hook, having an approximate gross vehicle weight or more than 32,000 lbs. May occasionally operate lighter vehicles such as buses, dump trucks, snow removal equipment, refuse trucks, tank trucks, sedans, carryalls, truck mounted cranes, forklifts, front-end loaders and backhoe’s.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal & Regulatory Guidance.
  • Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation.
  • Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • This position is a Drug Testing Designated Position (TDP).

  • Operate all vehicles that have an approximate gross weight of more than 32,000 pounds either on specific trip or upon a regular schedule.
  • Operate vehicles rated in capacity of less than 32,000 pounds such as: buses, dump trucks, snow removal equipment, refuse trucks, tank trucks, sedans, carryalls, truck mounted cranes, forklifts, front-end loaders, backhoe’s, etc.
  • Check and understand State, Federal, Dept of Transportation, Navy and Station local safety rules and regulations for operating vehicles.
  • Make operation inspections of vehicles for loose parts, proper air brake connections, damaged or worn tires, proper air pressure in tires, adequate fuel supply, proper coolant level in radiator, proper oil levels, battery condition, lighting system, etc.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.  Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is:  Ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision such as: 

 

     Operating vehicles, such as truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 32,000 lbs. or greater, buses, and/or general and special purpose vehicles, on long and short runs, over public roads and at highway speeds. I have handled the controls for starting, stopping, backing, shifting and driving the vehicle; judging overhead and side clearances, turning radius, and braking, distance from the preceding vehicle; loading, unloading, and overseeing the handling of cargo; reading road maps, determining the safest and shortest routes; understanding and applying safety rules and regulations. I have safely operated vehicles while towing equipment, ensuring safe connections and that the towed weight does not exceed the maximum allowed weight for the vehicle being driven. I have maneuvered vehicles, including tractor-trailer rigs in narrow and congested areas, between buildings, other vehicles and loading docks. I have operated dual braking systems. I have conducted vehicle inspections, performed operator maintenance, maintained preventive maintenance records, and recognized developing problems, reporting all problems to appropriate personnel. I have maintained trip records/logs, completed trip tickets and accident reports.

Certification or Licensing Required.

Have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A"

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tank/HAZMAT, P (passenger carrying) and T (trailer) endorsements, and other proper endorsement(s) for the type(s) and class(es) of vehicle(s) to be operated.

 

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

REQUIREMENTS:

Selectee is required to participate in the Department of Defense direct deposit of pay program.
