JOB SUMMARY:

The Joint Task Force National Capital Region Medicine (JTF CapMed) is the future of Military Medicine- a partnership in World Class Medical Healthcare.  The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Dilorenzo Clinic and the Joint Pathology Center, provide world class medical services to the nation's service members and their families.

About the Position:  This position is located in the Department of Pediatrics, Medical Services Directorate. The incumbent will serve as a specialist in the field of psychosocial activities designed to meet the needs of outpatient pediatric patients at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland.

You will serve as specialist in the field of psychosocial activities designed to meet the needs of outpatient pediatric patients at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. Provide support through involvement of the patient families and medical team. Design, organize, and implement activities through the assessment of the patient’s individual needs to encourage healthy growth and development. Develop specific modalities and practice plans for patients undergoing extensive and continuing stressful diagnostic testing (e.g., spinal taps). Develop specific modalities for the preparation of patients for hospital protocols, including surgery, with participation by the medical team. Insure orientation and interpretation of the Child Life Program to all WRNMMC outpatient staff, through continuous in-service teaching. Serve as a member of the patient health care team, providing expertise and coordination in planning the care of pediatric patients and their families to provide continuity of care.  Provide technical advice concerning child life activities to health care professionals within Walter Reed -- Bethesda.  Develop activity plans and activity areas for the new Child Life Program.

General Schedule

Specialized experience: To Qualify applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-09).  Specialized experience is defined as:  providing children with age-appropriate preparation for medical procedures, pain management, coping strategies, play and self expression activities related to healthcare and/or hospitalization.

 

 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Child Development
  • Skill in the Psychosocial Development of Children
  • Skill in Oral Communications
  • Skill in Written Communications


 


BASIC REQUIREMENTS

 

Degree: behavior or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

               OR

Combination of education and experience -- that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

               OR

Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

 

Certification: This position requires certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) by the Child Life Council (CLC).

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
