The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS), is currently accepting applications under examining authority authorized by 10 USC, Section 2164, for the above temporary or permanent position.

 

The primary purpose of this position is to perform corrective or preventive maintenance and/or renovation, inspection and repair of buildings, structures, and related property/equipment where a knowledge of a variety of trades is required to the work (trades include but not limited to are carpentry, roof repair, painting, sheet metal work, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and electrical repair.   Driving tasks incidental to preventive maintenance work and performing inspection and repair work to ensure compliance with environmental safety regulatory requirements.   Performs gardening and grounds maintenance.

 

This is an Excepted Service Position.

Performs corrective and preventive maintenance and/or renovation duties.   Makes visual and operational inspections of buildings, appurtenances, and fixtures and determines repairs needed.   Checks the condition of foundation, walls, flooring, porches, roofs, doors, windows, guttering, ventilators, plumbing, electrical systems, heating equipment, appliances, and building approaches.   Inspects for obvious safety and fire hazards and evidence of pest infestation.   Makes repairs within authorized limits, estimating and ordering materials needed.   For major repairs, estimates extent of repair required and initiates work orders through appropriate channels.   Maintains individual building record cards, entering dates of inspections conditions observed, repair work accomplished by maintenance team, and work orders initiated.   Performs all of the following types of repairs:   commercial air conditions and refrigeration units, electrical duties by troubleshooting power failures and locating source, carpentry duties by repairing and maintaining wood and other components of buildings, structures, tile floors and carpeting, and replacing damaged ceiling tile, sheet metal duties by repairing or replacing sections of metal gutters, down spouts, flashings, valleys, roof jacks, vent stacks, duties related to a variety of commercial heating units and natural gas fired systems, roofing duties by renailing or replacing shingles, or making repairs to composition roofing, plumbing duties by replacing items such as faucets, flush valves, ball cocks and diaphragms, painting duties where mixing of colors may be required and standard colors are used, may be assigned to perform gardening and ground maintenance duties and to perform motor vehicle operator duties.   Performs periodic visual and operational checks of building systems, playground equipment, ground coverings, and material storage areas to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations; for example, checks for asbestos or hazardous cleaning materials.   Repairs or corrects deficiency or initiates work orders to correct deficiency or initiates work orders to correct deficiencies.   May be assigned to provide pest control service calls or preventative maintenance by inspecting for pests, spraying treatments and disposing of carcasses as required.   Must be able to read and interpret specifications and technical manuals in order to affect necessary repairs.

You must show that you have had sufficient experience and/or training that provide you with the ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Must have the skill to perform roofing, carpentry, and painting, asphalt work, and cement work.

The work requires considerable standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and occasionally working in uncomfortable positions for short periods of time.  Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up material that weighs 15 pounds and occasionally handles materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds and over. Tasks are performed inside and outside.

 

Pre-employment and annual physicals may be required.


Physical Requirements:

Moderate physical activity is required in intermittent lifting and carrying of repair materials and tiring working positions are encountered.   The work requires considerable standing and walking.   Work requires climbing, stooping, and working in cramped places.

You must have a Valid Chloroflourocarbon certificate.
