Current students enrolled in a graduate program seeking a degree from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis, pursuing a degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field of study. U.S. citizenship is required.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) supports the U.S. Congress in its oversight responsibilities by conducting original research and analysis to assess how well federally-funded programs are operating and assist with the development of legislation and appropriation reviews.
As an Information Technology (IT) summer intern, you will learn how to conduct federal audits and program evaluations and apply that knowledge as part of a team. You will be tasked with assisting IT analysts in evaluating the Federal government's more than $80 billion dollar annual investment in information systems. Key issues include information technology (IT) capital planning and investment control; enterprise architecture development and implementation; information assurance and computer security; system/software acquisition, operations, and maintenance; network management; telecommunications management; and privacy. You will assist IT analysts in planning and conducting in-depth reviews of executive and legislative branch programs. You will collect appropriate data, analyze the data, develop data-based findings and conclusions, and present the information both orally and in writing to diverse audiences.
The anticipated start date for these intern positions is May/June 2013. Successful interns who complete a minimum of 400 hours may have an opportunity for a permanent position. The ability to convert to a permanent or term appointment with 400 hours of work experience acquired through GAO’s internship program is applicable to GAO ONLY.
The pay for our graduate intern positions is at the grade 7 step 1 rate or grade 9 step 1, depending on your educational level. The IT intern positions will be located in Washington D.C.

To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must have completed either between 18 and 35 semester hours or 27 and 53 quarter hours of graduate level work at the start of the summer internship.
To qualify for the GS-9 level, you must have completed 36 or more semester hours or 54 or more quarter hours of graduate level work at the start of the summer internship.
All applicants must have at least 18 hours of course work in a combination of management information systems, computer science, business information technology, information assurance/security, statistics, math or related fields of study.
All requirements must be complete at the start of the internship.
Please ensure that you select the appropriate grade level based on the number of hours you will have completed at the start of the summer internship. If you select grade 7 and grade 9, you will be considered for both grade levels. If you only select grade 9 and your transcript does not document your having completed at least the minimum number of required hours for a grade 9, you will not be considered for an intern position with us (not even at the grade 7 level).
