This position is located in the Production Resources Department, Machine Shop, and sets up and operates various types and sizes of lathes, boring mills, milling machines, shapers, planers, precision grinding machines, and specialized or multi-purpose machines related to these.

 

This position has a Full-Time Seasonal work schedule. A full-time seasonal work schedule provides permanent employment during periods of heavy workload. Incumbent is subject to placement in non-pay status at the end of peak work periods and recalled when workload increases.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

As a Machinist, your duties will include, but are not limited to: 

·        Machining castings, forgings, and bar stock of various metals and metal alloys.

·        Operating machine, controlling speed and feed, bringing various tools to bear in successive operations, and making various test cuts, roughing cuts, and finishing cuts.

·        Laying out and drilling matching holes for bolts, pins, or other fasteners.

·        Working on nuclear parts and assemblies under rigid quality and safety controlled conditions.

The Screen-out Element for this position is:  Ability to do the work of a Machinist without more than normal supervision such as:

Machining, repairing, assembling, and testing at a Journeyman Machinist level.  Examples of this level of work are: Operating conventional lathes and mills, or computer numerical control (CNC) machines, planning necessary work sequences, laying out reference points and lines to be followed in the machining process, planning for and setting up the work in the machine, selecting and shaping metal cutting tools and inserts, performing precision handwork, and interpreting blueprints/drawings, sketches, plans, specifications, and technical document publications to complete work. In addition to the screen-out element you will be evaluated on the following Job Elements through your resume and responses to the on-line assessment questionnaire:

OTHER INFORMATION:

Must be able to lift or carry 60 pounds and occasionally over 60 pounds.  Work is performed in the shop and requires standing for long periods.  It may require working for uncomfortable positions which involving stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.  Vision must be such that incumbent can identify color coding of materials and  can read small scales down to 1/64th of an inch. 

 

Works in shop areas, often in confined and congested areas, and is exposed to industrial noises generated or caused by operating ships machinery and equipment and shipyard shop machines, equipment, or tools.  May be exposed to industrial dirt, dust, grease, oil, and abrasives, caused by ships equipment, portable tools, shop equipment and machines, and industrial fumes from trade work.  May be exposed to organic growths such as sea growths, barnacles, and shellfish in components exposed to salt water.  Is exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns.  Under certain conditions may be required to perform similar work aboard ship, which may expose incumbent to inclement weather on occasion.  Will be required to use protective devices, clothing, or equipment while exposed to adverse environmental working conditions and hazardous work assignments. 

 

The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present.  These agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc.  To ensure employee safety and health, the shipyard maintains personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations.  These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance.  As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualification for duty involving work with these agents.

 

Work assignments may require unusual shifts, backshifts, overtime, and travel. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.  Must be able to attain and maintain qualifications for nuclear and radiological work.

 

Incumbent is responsible for following safe work practices, including the use of appropriate personnel protective equipment (PPE).  Required to perform duties with the highest level of attention to safety and health, and will take the initiative to make the work area safe for self and co-workers.  Required to notify the supervisor as soon as possible of items incumbent is unable to correct.  Responsible for following all requirements concerning the use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
