JOB SUMMARY:

The National Defense University (NDU) educates military and civilian leaders through teaching, research, and outreach in national security strategy, national military strategy, and national resource strategy; joint and multinational operations; information strategies, operations, and resource management; acquisition; and regional defense and security studies.

The Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC) at NDU was established to fulfill the Secretary of Defense’s intent to enable research into captured records with “complete openness and rigid adherence to academic freedom and integrity.” The CRRC’s mission is to facilitate the use of captured records to support research, both within and outside the government.

This is a Title 10 Excepted Service Appointment.  Appointment not to exceed 1 year with the possibility for extension.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Individual must be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance

  • Serves as a research analyst and program manager for the Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC), Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University
  • Provides research, operational, and outreach support to the Director and the staff of the CRRC
  • Works with other CRRC staff to identify, prioritize, categorize, transfer, and maintain records in the CRRC and other research databases in full compliance with the CRRC charter and standard operating procedures
  • Supports the external research mission of the Center, requiring work with visiting scholar and researchers
  • Conducts original research at the direction of the CRRC Director and the Deputy Director

  1. Ability to read very basic Arabic
  2. College-level mastery of the English language (spoken and written) and ability to edit and conduct research in English

Qualifications that are desirable, but not required:

Ability to conduct research in Arabic and/or translate from Arabic to English

Familiarity with military and bureaucratic terminology

Document Exploitation (DOCEX) experience


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Seldom work-related travel

Position is subject to drug testing

HIGHLY QUALIFYING CRITERIA:

- Experience designing and producing outreach materials, including graphics, newsletters, and reports

- Knowledge of library science and digital collections

- Management of or research in digital archives

- Academic study in international relations, history, national security affairs, or the humanities or social science

- An understanding of the Saddam Hussein government, al-Qaeda or affiliated movements, and/or contemporary Afghan or Middle Eastern history, terrorism, or U.S. foreign policy

- Participation in or support of scholarly or national security-related research projects

  • This is a National Defense University (NDU) civilian faculty position as provided under Title 10.  Initial appointment is not to exceed 1 year; may be renewed in one- to three-year increments thereafter.
