JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position: Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation. You can watch them on parade or competing as intercollegiate athletes in a wide range of sports events. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works to maintain the roads, grounds and facilities, two libraries (Academic and Community), a military hospital, fire department, chapels, restaurants. West Point's 3,000 civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center, and to recreational facilities such as an 18-hole Golf Course and Ski Slope.

In this position you will operate a variety of engineering equipment such as backhoes with compactor, gradalls, drill, and pavement breaker, front-end loaders, road rollers, road graders, pumps, and compressors used in construction and maintenance of roads, parking areas, and general excavation and construction. Work on excavating jobs excavating from one to ten feet to repair broken water lines, electric lines, gas lines, steam lines, and other utilities. Work on grading jobs holding the grade established by the leader or foreman, advising method to be followed in accomplishing work when water is encountered in excavations or in work involved in the displacement of rock. Perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance of roads, walks, storm drains and sewer lines using a good working knowledge of accepted practices used in excavating, placing shoring in excavations and in earth moving. Erect shoring when excavating over four feet in depth.

Conditions of Employment:

You must submit your valid Class B State Drivers License and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with your application. Physical effort: The incumbent will frequently lift and carry heavy objects, 100 pounds or more, such as cables, chains, shoring, attachments for bookcase, etc. Exert heavy effort in pushing, pulling and depressing the various levers, clutches and brakes. Considerable strain is caused by constant vibration of equipment and jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Physical effort is required to turn heavy vehicles and operate vehicle controls. 

Working Conditions: Work is performed outside in all types of weather. Work from open and closed operator seat on hills, slopes and bank edges where there is a danger of sliding, tipping or overturning. Subject to insinuator and unsafe situations during sewer cleaning operations and while working in excavations with equipment; however, protective clothing is provided. Frequent exposure to injury from swinging loads, falling objects and lifting. Exposure to noise, dust dirt, heat and cold fumes from work area.  Subject to be called in after duty hours and weekends. 

  

 

 


HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
