QUALIFICATIONS: The following are the amounts of experience and/or education required to qualify for this position. Creditable Experience is defined as, experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with current Medical Support Assistant responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a Medical Support Assistant.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Experience - Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position, OR Education One year above high school. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university OR Combination Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying for this position. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
Experience GS-5: One (1) year of experience in clerical or office work that is directly related to the duties of a Medical Support Assistant and that equips you with the with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. This experience must be equivalent to the next lower grade level. Experience at this level includes, but is not limited to: scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patients appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both the inpatient and/or outpatient appointments for areas of responsibilities; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other facilities; and performing basic eligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverages. *Your resume must support your answers in the occupational questionnaire.
Education GS-5: Four years of successfully completed education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university. *Transcripts are required.
Experience GS-6: One (1) year of experience in clerical or office work that is directly related to the duties of a Medical Support Assistant and that equips you with the with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. This experience must be equivalent to the next lower grade level. Experience at this level includes, but is not limited to: the ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information and/or data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports; knowledge of basic medical terminology; ability to make appointments in a clinical setting; ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work; ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels; and the ability to identify customers concerns, perform the task required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. It will be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
