The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.  The IHS provides a comprehensive health services delivery system for American Indians and Alaska Natives with opportunity for maximum tribal involvement in developing and managing programs to meet their health needs.

  • Develop and coordinate administrative support duties and perform diabetes prevention and management services by assuring optimal medical nutrition therapy for culturally sensitive and culturally competent diabetic patients or at risk for diabetes individuals and communities
  • Assures high quality diabetes prevention and improvement services; works collaboratively with the Service Unit diabetes program to ensure diabetes policies and procedures are standardized
  • Coordinate program prevention, treatment and care of quality improvement activities in accordance with the strategic plan; provide oversight, coordination and direction for on-going, systematic evaluation of diabetes prevention and management services using established methods and nationally recognized standards
  • Provides family-focused diabetes and nutrition education to patient and groups in clinics and community setting; Provides consultation and education to staff and community members to expand services and increase public awareness of diabetes control and prevention
  • conducts nutritional and diabetes self management assessment of clients, develop nutritional and diabetes care plans consistent with cultural, social and physiological requirements
  • Records information in medical records and/or electronic health records on nutritional requirements, patient's progress, education, follow-up, etc. in compliance with the Privacy Act and IHS policies
  • Operates the program's programmatic, financial and personnel administration and management; assess and manage departmental staffing, supplies, equipment inventory and other resources needed to meet program goals
  • Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignment and the capabilities of employee; responsible for the application and implementation of EEO program guidelines relative to minorities and women, selection, details, reassignments, training, awards, promotions hiring, etc.

Specialized Experience:  In addition, Applicants must have specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.  Specialized experience is administering, managing and coordinating program planning, implementation and evaluating of community based nutrition care, education and promotion services and conducting nutritional assessment of clients, developing nutritional care plans, and recording information in medical records regarding nutritional requirements, progress, education, follow-up and etc.

Your education and work experience may be combined to meet the qualification requirements of this position.

Education:  Position requires positive education.  Basic Requirements:  Degree in dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science.

The curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) in effect at the time of graduation.  (Professional registration as a registered Public Health Nutritionist (R.D.) is evidence of meeting ADA requirements).  Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the American Dietetic Association that was conducted as part of the undergraduate program or after completion of the basic requirement for a baccalaureate degree, is qualifying at grade GS-7 for Public Health Nutritionist.

Applicants possessing professional registration as a Registered Public Health Nutritionist meet the requirement for GS-7.

Substitution of Education for Experience:  Graduate education may be substituted for experience for the GS-09 and 11 levels in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standards for General Schedule positions.

In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below:

GS-9:  2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree; or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-7

GS-11:  3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-9

Registration:  Must possess and maintain a current registration with the Commission on Dietetic.
