What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This position is also being advertised concurrently with announcement PAC-2013-0089 (Open to current or former Federal employees).

One position will be filled at either the GS-6 or 7 level, however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

As an Administrative Operations Assistant with the USGS, California Water Science Center (CAWSC), located at Sacramento, CA, major duties include but are not limited to:

- Provides general administrative and clerical support in the Office of the Center Director and Deputy Director, CAWSC. Refers incoming calls and visitors to appropriate staff or office.  Prepares official correspondence, reports, and other documents. Maintains office records, databases, spreadsheets, and graphics in support of administrative activities and operations.

- Receives and reviews regulation, directives and memoranda on administrative functions.  Formulates and recommends changes in administrative policies and procedures for efficiency improvements.

- Interprets travel regulations and issues or oversees issuance of authorization.  Makes domestic and foreign travel arrangements and submits travel vouchers in accordance with travel regulations.

- Maintains records and controlled property lists of custodians and ensures excess property is properly disposed of or transferred.

To qualify based on specialized experience, you must meet the requirements listed below:

GS-6: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Example of GS-5 level work: Performs standard and nonstandard assignments involving different and unrelated processes or methods in varying sequence; work requires extensive knowledge of rules, operations, or business practices. Follows accepted practices in resolving nonrecurring problems and meeting deadlines; completed products are evaluated for effectiveness in meeting goals; extensive guidelines in the form of instructions, manuals, and regulations are applied.

GS-7: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples of GS-6 level work: 1) Processes a wide variety of transactions subject to different sets of rules and regulations. Regarded as an expert source of information on processing transactions; completed work is reviewed for conformance with policy and regulatory requirements; numerous and varied guidelines are adapted and applied; 2) Performs a segment of the evaluative work of an administrative function; identifies issues or problems and seeks alternative solutions consistent with applicable regulations. Works independently in completing assignments; completed work is reviewed for effectiveness in meeting goals; guidelines such as regulations, evaluation criteria, and precedents have gaps in specificity.
