Do you want excitement and challenge in your job? Become a Park Ranger (Protection) protecting the National Park Service resources. As a Park Ranger in this position, protecting the resources will be your main focus. You will patrol backcountry areas, protect park resources and visitors, apprehend violators, enforce park rules and regulations, provide emergency services, manage wildlife/human interactions on the roadways or in campgrounds, and encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources. You will also provide information to visitors about park resources.
The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill up to 8 temporary positions at Glenn Canyon National Park, Page, Arizona and Glen Canyon, (Dangling Rope, Bullfrog, Hite, and Halls Crossing) Utah. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April, 2013
Page, Arizona (Wahweap) is located on the Arizona-Utah border, 135 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, the nearest larger community. Wahweap Sub-District is located seven miles from Page. Page looks out on beautiful Lake Powell which offers boating, associated water sports recreation and fishing. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Page is centrally located to many other National Parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and Canyonlands to name a few. Page offers normal community amenities such as shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12 and college courses available through local Coconino Community College. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging from 100 in summer to mid-teens in winter with low humidity and sunshine most days of the year. Dangling Rope, Utah is located approximately one hour up lake, via boat, from Wahweap Marina in Page Arizona. This is a totally water based operation located in Utah only accessible by boat. The district also provides protection for Rainbow Bridge National Monument. The Dangling Rope developed area has a marina with fuel, a small grocery and supply store and a housing area for Park Service employees and Park Service concessionaire employees. Employees use government boats to travel to Wahweap Marina in Page, Arizona for weekends, medical, shopping and other larger community amenities. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging up to 100+ degree in the summer. Government housing is required and the employee is subject to frequent call-outs during emergency Situations.
Bullfrog, Utah is a small, remote, in-park community of approximately 300 residents during the summer and about 100 residents in the winter. Amenities include a marina, marina store and gas docks, seasonal lodge and restaurant, gas station/convenience store and garage, and urgent care clinic, and a K-12 school. Teacher/student ratio is 1 teacher per 2-5 students. Full service communities are in Blanding, Utah (90 miles) and Monticello, Utah (115 miles) which has a small hospital and dentists. Major services are available in Cortez, Durango, and Grand Junction, Colorado, or Page, Arizona, all 3 to 5 hours away via all-weather highways. The Bullfrog Sub-District encompasses beautiful red-rock canyon country. Bullfrog is the main access point to Lake Powell in the up lake District and visitation is heavy in the summer. Summer temperatures run to the low 100's and winter temperatures are in the 30's with sunshine most days of the year. Recreation runs the spectrum of outdoor activities with backpacking, canyoneering, skiing (water and snow), boating, whitewater sports, hunting and fishing all within a few hours' drive and some within walking distance of the housing area. Hite, UT is a very small community in a scenic and remote area of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It is part of the Hall's Crossing District which is the largest district in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Hite is the area where the Colorado River meets Lake Powell. This is the take out point for river runners rafting Cataract Canyon. There are four year round residents in Hite, with a few seasonal employees during the summer months that work in law enforcement and for the concessionaire. There is a gas station and store, a launch ramp, a visitor center and fire cache, and a campground. K-12 grade school is in Hanksville, UT, 50 miles north on Highway 95. This position is a required occupancy position. The employee selected will live in very nice government housing with a fenced in backyard. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Glen Canyon is centrally located to many other National Parks, such as the Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, and Mesa Verde to name a few. Halls Crossing, Utah is a small, remote in-park community of 80 residents in the summer and about 30 in the winter. Amenities include a small convenience store, gas station, marina, housekeeping trailers and a ferry with connections to Bullfrog, 3 miles across the lake. Across the lake in Bullfrog there is a medical clinic, a seasonal lodge and restaurant and a K-12 school. Teacher/ student ratio is 1 teacher per 2-5 students. All school children are bussed/ boated across the bay to Bullfrog. Full service communities are in Blanding, Utah (90 miles) and Monticello, Utah (115 miles) which has a small hospital and dentist. Major services are available in Grand Junction, Cortez, Durango Colorado or Page Arizona; all are 3 to 5 hours away via all-weather highways. The Bullfrog district encompasses beautiful red-rock canyon country ranging in elevations from 4,000' to 8,000' and includes a large segment of Lake Powell and whitewater portions of the Colorado and San Juan Rivers. Summer temperatures run low 100's and winter temperatures are in the 30's with sunshine most days of the year. Recreation runs the spectrum of outdoor activities with backpacking, canyoneering, skiing (water and snow), boating, whitewater sports, hunting and fishing all within a few hours' drive and some within walking distance if the housing area.
