This position is located at the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), Washington Navy Yard, Washington, DC.

 

This position is located in the Archives Branch at the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC). The Archives Branch is responsible for the management and service of Navy records and documents of historical value, including Navy records sent to the NHHC in accordance with SECNAV M-5210.1. Work encompasses accessioning, arranging, describing, preserving and servicing of the photograph and film records in the archive.  This responsibility includes providing reference service that employs (1) knowledge of archival library and other research resources, (2) grasp of the subject matter and substance of the inquiry, and (3) an understanding of the point of view and the needs of the researcher.  Reference services range from providing specific images in response to explicit inquiries, to providing professional research support, advice and consultation to government officials or scholars concerned with locating and studying photographs and other visual records related to broad or complex subjects. 

 

KEY REQUIREMENTS

As an Archivist your duties may include but are not limited to:

 

· Appraising the potential archival value of records recommended for disposal by

  agency records manager.

· Providing reference and research service with respect to large bodies of permanently

  valuable records preserved as documentary evidence of major Federal activities

  pertinent to specialized subjects.

· Identify and establish priorities for digitization and electronic posting collections or

  records (images) relating to the operational history of the United States Navy.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL GRADES:

 

The Office of Personnel Management has identified the following minimum educational requirements for this position: (PLEASE NOTE: You must submit a copy of your college transcripts or professional registration to verify your claim)

 

·        A Bachelor's degree in archival science.

 

OR

·       
A bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history, political science and/or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.


OR

 

·    A combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in B above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Experience must be Professional experience in archival science, or in a directly related field of work, such as history, that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.

 

In addition to meeting the educational requirements above, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as follows:

 

GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing professional archival functions by researching historical information and arranging documents in functional categories. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Or

·        Successful completion of a master’s or equivalent graduate degree.

Or

·        Successful completion two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree.

Or

·        A combination of education and experience as described above that equates to one year of experience.

 

 

GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing professional archival functions by researching historical information, analyzing records, arranging documents in functional categories and appraising archival records for possible disposal. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Or

·        Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to archival science.

Or

·        Successful completion of three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree in archival science.
